    Hello jcoats,

That sounds like a fairly plausible explanation for that. All though I would tend to think that part of the information that dxf file carries would have to be what "units" it was drawn in.

    Default Whale skeleton

    Gentlemen,

One thing that's really caught my eye is the Blue Whale skeleton. I've looked at quite a few whale dxf files but they all seem to be for outlines of whales. I would like to build a whale "skeleton" similar to the way those dinosaur skeletons are built. Surprisingly (since whale hugging is so popular) I haven't even been able to find one of those small wooden commercialy made puzzles of a whale skeleton. If I had one of those I'd at least have a starting point to try and work up a dxf file to cut the pieces from.

Has any one here ever come across a whale "skeleton" file?

    Thanks.

    Dave

I have scoured the net for 3D puzzles and I haven't seen a blue whale skeleton. But it dosn't look that difficult to make your own. 2/3 are 2 basic shapes which can be scaled and stretched. Each bone in the head could be done as multiple parts to make them curve(like the pteradons wings), same for the fins.

Mines progressing well.Looking to test the joints for the wheels this weekend. Also considering putting a motor in it.

    Good luck

    Liam

    Liam,

Looks like the details on your train drawing are filling in nicely. Looking forward to seeing it built.

    Default JINTY DOWNLOAD PART 1

Here is the DXF for the Jinty. It has been put through a thourgh test by my boys. Pictured is the MK1 version after a day with them. DXF is MK2 and has been tested. Its a standard 0-6-0 so could be used as base for other designs. A few points to watch out for build the wheels one side. Thread on the sides to the axles followed by the wheels on the other side. Conrods to go on last, but make sure you get them the right way round as axles are not equally spaced.

When this push along version is finished I am looking to add a motor.

No glue is required. The conrod is the only item to have a pocket on finished train.

    Liam,

Look'n good man. Great detail. Kind of makes me wish I was a wood worker instead of a torturer of innocent metal.

What thickness of MDF is used for this model?

Its 4.75mm. But it can be scaled up. To cut below this thickness you would need to scale down the cutter. I used a 1/8" bit. 6mm or 1/4" sheet would also be fine with a 3mm or 1/8" cutter.

I used 3/16" hardboard. It's awful stuff but they don't have MDF that thin either at Lowes or Home Depot. The 6 "washers" do they go behind the wheels between the wheel and chassis?

Yep the washers go between the wheels and the outside of the chassis. The DXF can be scaled up. Going smaller its essential to keep the router bit proportional. Otherwise fit might be too tight.
