Hi people. Crashed the X2 and damaged the spindle MT3 taper. Getting 0.1mm+ run-out
Anyone in the u.k. know who can re-grind it or whatever you do to make it perfectly round again?
It's the older 350w model X2 part no. 79.
I can find a R8 one but was told it won't work with the MT3 casting, can't find a MT3 version anywhere.

If I have no luck with Cromwell tools where I got the machine from I'll have to look at my options.
Told Cromwell "if they can't provide parts support for their machines they shouldn't be selling them!".
Left it with them to look into for now and see what they say when they ring on Monday.

A complete brand new spindle with casting from L.M.S. cost is $119.95, with shipping the total cost is only $186.45
If you think for a moment a spindle regrind will cost less than $200.00 you may be fooling yourself however Y.M.M.V.

O.k. So after a bit of research I found 4 different u.k. places that look like they sell the same machine under different brands.
All the manuals and part keys are identical.
Osaki OSA2715500K (the one I have)
Sealey SM2502
Clarke CMD300
Draper OPDRA34023
Then you have the usual Sieg X2, Grizzly G8689, Harbor freight and so forth.
Sealey and Clarke got back to me with the spindle in stock.
Ordered one from Sealey and some AC type bearings from ebay.
Lets hope it all fits.
So far though all the upgrade bits I've purchased for the X2 have been a straight fit onto the Osaki from Cromwel tools.

Sealey sent me a R8 spindle?
Sealey don't even issue a R8 machine.
For Christ sake.
After numerous emails to Sealey and pictures of both my original MT3 spindle and the R8 one they sent they turned round and said "you must have the Sieg X2 with R8 taper so our part is not compatible"!?
They're the ones who sent the R8 spindle in the first place! Banging head against the wall.
Now. After speaking to Draper tools they've 'assured me' that the spindle they have in stock for their Draper OPDRA34023 machine is definitely MT3.
Decided to order it and should be here mid week. Here's hoping.
Trying to decide what to do with the R8 one one from Sealey. Keep it and have the option of R8 or send it back saying 'you try and fit a MT3 in there'!.
I have bought a 35x62x14 bottom bearing for the R8 and as I'm using the belt drive conversion it will plop straight in without the gears.
It's a bit stupid all this. Both taper variants carry the same part number.
Three things spring to mind:
1: The u.s. use imperial (R8)
2: The u.k. uses metric (MT3)
3: The people in the Chinese factory are thick!!!
Rotatech Limited rang me yesterday about my inquiry on grinding mine. Haven't rang them back yet. Turns out they're only up the road.

I'll re-phrase it to 'those tapers are more popular' in those Countries
I've seen both R8 and MT spindles here in the US. My guess is that it's whatever the local seller seems to want to carry.

The seller in question only sells one mini mill the SM2502 which is only sold with MT3.
Why they'd have a R8 stocked for it is beyond me, the gears won't fit it and it needs a different bottom bearing.
They're just dumb-ass distributors. Although both variants have the same part number so if you don't know the machine you wouldn't realize and just stick it on the shelf when it came in from China.
I'm keeping it anyway as I have the X2 belt conversion fitted so I don't need the gears just the bottom bearing. I'll get a R8 ER32 holder at some point.
O.k. So fingers crossed I've supposedly got a MT3 spindle from a different manufacturer ('distributor') rolls eyes on it's way.
Should be here the next day or two.
Thinking about stripping the X2 down to have a look at the Y backlash, as it stands it's 0.007mm.
I have zero on the X and Z. I'm using Chinese 1204 screws on X & Y with 1605 on the Z.
So far my upgrades have been the solid base which I tidied up in the Y section to give 162mm travel.
The belt conversion.
Ballscrews and thrust bearings.
Nema23 425 oz-in steppers.
Could do with a better spindle motor tho. Damn thing shut down while using a 8mm cutter but the table kept going until the bit snapped in half. That's how the taper got damaged. Never leave the machine running alone for too long!!!
Also. When programming it make sure it'll lift the Z when you rapid over!!! eek!

Was going to order the full head in the link but got a pretty good deal on a new machine exactly the same as what I have.
Wanted a bigger 1kw one but was too short of funds.
Going to swap the heads over and use the inaccurate one mainly for drilling.
Taking my 1204 screws out and replacing them with 1605's.
Converting the new one using the 1204's.
Already have the elecs and the pc so why not
I normally make RC parts like motor mounts so at least now I can use the other one for spotting, drilling all the holes.
Will free up the main one so it can just keep on chipping rather than tying it up for a week drilling holes
Just need to make sure I don't mess up on programming Mach
This will keep me out of mischief for a few weeks. Given myself a bit to do.
