Probably weighs about 70 pounds. Will try and get the additional info today.

That would be a good motor for testing. UPS ground would be the best way to ship. Where are you located ?
If you send it, put a low $ value on it, so there is no customs charge please.

Sorry but I got sidetracked and forgot to get the photo. Will try again tomorrow. My 10 second attention span.

Thanks Claude, for the massive motor. I was able to test the Viper 250 with it. The UPS driver wasn't too pleased about delivering that package.
That lathe must be a beast.

I'm using 600 volt 96 amp IGBTs in the Viper 250, with the Short Circuit Protection improved. I tested the SCP at a full 170 volts with safety glasses , but there is just a spark and the drive trips after a second.

These motor are/were typically used with large 3 phase SCR drives, you can roughly calculate the very high initial current, that can occur if steps are not taken to accelerate this very slowly on a lower current-capable drive.
If the armature has not had the opportunity to develop back EMF and if the armature resistance is typically around .15 ohms and your drive happens to reach a full 120vdc output, then the Potential motor current could initially be ~ 800amps.
Hopefully this is a PM motor and not a wound field?

    Hi All,

I want to try Viper250 with Super Line SDN-MFZ-VF spindle, I will install a 1000 line encoder for it.

    Any chance of success?

What voltage will the power supply be ?

That motor has a field winding. You would have to get a separate circuit for that.

Voltage for rotor is 210 VDC and need some margin for handling regenerative energy during deceleration.

I will provide field winding power separately, probably through adjustable current regulator.

Due to interest in large drives lately, I will be making the Viper 400. It will be a a full 350 volts and 40 amps. I'm using a DSPIC on a daugter board above the main power board.
This drive will also be available as a AC 3phase servo eventually as well. It will be priced under $300.

Hopefully i will have it available by early 2012

Any update on the Viper 400?
