Setting up Encoders
I am wondering how I am going to set up my viper 200 drives with E6 us digital encoders,Im wondering because I plan on putting the encoders on the ballscrews instead of the motors. The timing gears on x and y axis are 2 to 1 ratio, and the z axis it will be 1 to 1 so I will set it up on the motor. Any ideas as to how to go about this. I want to set them up on the bench not on the machine.
Thanks Mike

It should't matter as long as there is no back lash.
You couldn't do that on an AC servo (since it needs commutation from the encoder) but on a DC servo, armature position doesn't matter.

Ok so I can set up the drives with the encoder on the motor for bench testing then move them to the ball screws for final hookup?
Thanks Mike

is there a burning reason to do things that way it would seem to me that encoder on motor is always the preferred way to do things.
