Today i machined the main shaft that is holding the plate on where the tool grippers are. I also made a small new movie with a status update on the machine. You can also see the toolchanger move.

First of all, great work Stef and kudos to your persistance on a such an extensive project!
Question:
Saw that you prepared yourself for the 4&5th axis too. Do you intend to build it on your own? If so, what kind of mechanics do you intend to use? Harmonic drive?
And may I ask were you anytime considering an HSK spindle and why you didn’t go for it at the end?
P.S.
Would love to see your project insights even more often.
All the best,
Aleksandar Sladic
That is really coming along!! Will the tool changer have an enclosure or be exposed to the coolant and flying chips?
@SladicStroj i bought that BT30 spindle already a long time ago. At that point i dint really tough about other spindles then a bt30. I still don't regret this spindle so far it works perfect.
@rocketflier Yes there will be an cover around the carousel with a door that opens when the carousel moves in.
This weekend if finished up the last wiring en coding on the macro, made 2 videos about it one that explains the tool change process and the other one show some small machining with the use of a few tool changes.

I can't believe no one has commented yet since your last update. Awesome progress! Youtube actually recommended your videos for me before I even checked your thread.
I love your touch screen and interface, it looks fantastic. Did you do the interface work yourself?
Very nice, I haven’t checked in awhile. Great progress!

Really nice project!
Does your vfd stop at a certain orientation? How do you set that up?
Aluminum frame CNC router, JET GHB-1340 Lathe conversion, Bridgeport BOSS Retrofit, I'm gonna be busy for a while.
Hi, can you kindly tell me which model you used like Shaft Couplings?
Hi Stef,
Lovely machine. I am looking at making my own cnc as well, what size linear slides have you used on the x,y,z axis?
Pre-loaded carriages, what rated preloading do they have??
Many Thanks
Ian
Curious also if you have cut steel on it?
Thanks
Great work, Stef!
I'm a machine service tech repairman since almost 20 years, and I must say I'm very impressed by your work. Very nice indeed. I'd love to build something similar one day, this is great inspiration. Right now setting up a small 120 m2 home machine shop, but for now I'm installing old school manual milling machines and lathe. A surface grinder and a cylindrical grinder by TOS. Latest addition is a 550x350x450 VMC by aerospace machine supplier Modig Machine tools. Old school TNC150 control, my first CNC.
Keep up the fantastic work, thumbs up to you! /Lasse
Stef,
I have just finished reading the thread from start to finish. Your attention to detail is outstanding and amazing build.
I am/was preparing for my concrete router build but now rethinking my plans after seeing yours.
Do you mind sharing the cost for getting the laser cut table?
Cheers
Dave.
Stef,
Can't say enough about your build. I've done a few and this one is beautiful and inspiring, especially the creative methods to avoid shipping parts our for 3rd party finishing. I've read the entire thread, and for some reason I can't find your selection of linear rails and bearings. Would you mind providing some guidance on how you sized them and what supplier you went with?
Cheers,
David
Hey David,
I selected the rails on a feeling. its not really based on a calculation. i bought them all on aliexpress at the same seller:

Made a small video about a project im working on now. It can show you some actual machining with sound.
Hi Mckoz- David
The rail suppliers (like Hiwin) have design manuals that lay out how to size rails and cars. They have worked examples as well.. Peter
