I am doing a bit of research to help out a friend. They are exploring the idea of getting a small CNC router for machining wood. The work envelope would be max 12"x12" on a work piece perhaps a maximum of 1" thick. The main application will be for machining wooden type-faces and wooden type graphics something like these:

So while it does not necessarily need high end machine-tool grade accuracy, reasonably good resolution and smooth curves would be key, I think. It does not need to be super fast, nor does it need to be a "run it 24/7" sort of industrial machine.
I have no idea what's out there and available, what the better setups are, good options for software, etc. Think of this as a tool for someone who has a job to do using this as a tool, rather than a hobbyist that is looking for cool new tool to build, experiment, or generally screw around with. I understand the concept of cost/quality/user-friendly, and buy vs build trade-offs. I am just trying to understand the ranges of options and am just trying to help make some semi-educated decisions.
I have not done a great deal of research as of yet, but what I have done shows a sort of overwhelming array of choices.
For the sake of discussion and as a starting point, let's say we have a budget of $1500.00. I say that with the full understanding that this may be an unreasonable number.
Any recommendations, thoughts, experiences, stuff to look at?
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks!
