Yes it's normal, it should be long enough to take out the backlash.
Is it normal for backlash compensation to cause a pause when reversing any single axis' direction? How long would a normal pause be?
I understand 125oz steppers are somewhat small, but what could I expect from them? Will they cut alum/brass with mild doc?

when I was using TurboCNC, a slight pause could be seen, possibly about 0.1 seconds or so, while the backlash was taken up. What software are you using to control the machine?
My name is Electric Nachos. Sorry to impose, but I am the ocean.

I haven't bought a machine yet, but this one's got TurboCNC 300g and DeskNCDOS
I am going to get one but am undecided as to what, and if I really have the time to tackle a retrofit or if I should buy one already done.
I found a guy in Indiana selling these for under $1,000.00. I understand I can build a new one for nearly half that, but time is against me. How many hours would it take a n00b to do a retrofit?
I've looked at the taig's, sherlines, and some others. The taig's are nice, but too much, around 2k.

Rek'd, have you looked at the Taig for sale in the for sale section here at the Zone?
Yeah, he sold it already.

The backlash speed/feed depends on the software you are using, on most high end systems the backlash value & speed will operate at the maximum rpm set for that axis in rapid. In other words if you had an X axis movin in the plus direction at feed of 4ipm with a change of direction occuring at the end of the plus dir at 4"ipm and the max rapid feed was set to 100ipm and the back lash was recorded as 10thou" negative.
The move would consist of the x axis moving to position in the +dir at 4ipm at the point of reversal it would rapid 100ipm in the negative 10thou" before completing the x axis - move at 4ipm.
