I think I've created a monster...or 2.
I have posted a link to the zone in your thread link from post 38 switcher! I also made myself sound very informed with stuff I've learned here....

Im going to try the dandalion from post number 28 in the next day or two now that I have a better idea how to do this.
I guess the race is on to be the first to generate toolpaths and actually carve something from a Silo3D creation...People who have already got a toolpath generator program and/or a router actually built are not allowed to claim to be the first! That would be cheating!! :hehehe:
LOL ger....it's true. What have you and miljnor, Geof etc released onto the zone....or the world!!
PS: Im still not sure how to get rid of the base under the sheep without leaving a big hollow hole. Its probably just a matter of rotating underneath and extruding all the faces back towards the sheep, but I'm going to bed now. Night.
Here's another attempt at the daisy (Not dandaloin!) from the previous post. Again far from perfect but at this point I think its just a matter of practice. The center is projecting too much and I didn't put in a proper ring around the center as in the drawing. Also the leaves need a bit of work because I didn't 'split tool' the picture in as much detail as in post 28. But it only took about 15mins....that'll be €7.50c please!

I have decided to stick with the daisy (And only the daisy ! ) until I get it right. Then I'll move onto something else. I'll post another attempt when I have what I consider a significant improvement.....might take a while!
L8rs.
You trying to do something like this? I cheated, I didn't use Silo.

I think I've got the daisy clinched. At least I know how Im going to do it, just need time to sit down and actually do it! I will post up pics soon.
Hi all,
Unfortunately I haven't had much time to play with this. And my most recent attempt which I thought would work...didnt!
Anyway, its a bit better, but went wrong at the extrusion point. I now have to figure out how to define the individual leaves more so that when extruded, they don't move 'with' each other. I think this is just a matter of using the split tool on each side of every single black line of my texture, as opposed to just following the black line with one line. Twice the work, but still not exactly difficult.
Is anyone else using this now or am I exploring on my own here?
L8rs.
Incidentially, Vectric have used Silo for some items to generate toolpaths with their upcoming 'Cut3D' program and its seems to work great. So y'all better jump in here with me!
diarmaid,

Thanks Switcher,
I have seen that. At the start of the thread I wrote:
"7) Program to generate toolpaths from above created 3D. I haven't decided what this will be yet, but have an idea. [Will have to decide on and buy this]"
Cut3D was my idea!
Anyway, Im hoping to use Silo3D and Cut3D. Couldn't say anything earlier because it hadn't been announced yet. Thanks m8. L8rs.
Thanks for keeping 'mum' diarmaid.
We still aren't ready to make a formal announcement but should
have the Trial version + Tutorials etc ready in the next few days.
We will then post the news plus more details.
Thanks again guys,
Tony
lol Bitmap to 3D....that'll take a while!
No problem Tony I can't wait for the trial.
But yeah Switcher, Silo and Cut3D all for $400. Or about €380 since silo will be cheaper after the currency conversion. Cant really go wrong. Now I've gotta get back to learning Silo, since I really only know about 10% of its features so far. And I have a new idea for the daisy. Im going to have to buy Silo soon though, because not being able to save the basic daisy each go is eating up the time. Unfortunately my better half is not well at the moment, and medical treatment far away in the USA is expensive so I can't really afford any non-necessary outgoings and VCarvePro with Mach3 is my first priority.
L8rs.
Tony, can you post some pictures of four sided milling part of the software. I can only find two sided objects.
Terje
Just to add in that Im still very interested in this thread. Now my machine is finished Silo will be a purchase straight after Cut3D.
Hi Terje,
Sorry for the slow response. I've been trying to get some pictures of 4 sided projects machined using Cut3D. Most customers are using the software to machine single and 2 sided sided projects and we don't currently have an pictures of a 4 sided job. We do have a customer doing some very interesting 3 sided work (he simply doesn't use the toolpath for one of the faces) and I'll post some pictures when we have them.
The key to 4 sided machining is being able to hold and index the material into the 4 positions, accurately. The easiest method is to use a rotary chuck / indexer.
Below are pictures from a customer Frank Haverkamp who runs a ShopBot router and is using the slicing tool in Cut3d to machine large projects using relatively thin sheets of wood and mdf.
Frank commented,
It used to take me an hour to create slices in solidworks and then save them to files. I would then cut them in Visualmill. Since I got Cut3D I import the whole .stl object and slice it in minutes. I then just program and cut. Simple!
Anyone guess what the models are?
Tony

Wooden speaker housing?....WAIT...NO...I got it....Abstract Art?
Both correct - Molds for Very large loudspeakers!
The shapes are wooden patterns that are used for making master molds.
It shows how the gantry height of your machine or available material thickness does not have to restrict the size of job you can make.
