Default Scan a metal part with flat bed scanner into CAD program

Does anyone have experience doing this?

I have a flat part with 5 holes in it it has lots of curves and instead of trying to use an edge finder and finding lots of points and entering them into a CAD software and interpolating lines is it possible to just use a flat bed scanner to scan the part and then convert it into a DXF?

    Thanks in advanced.

    Mike

Yes that is very possible. I have done this but lay down two rules in the x and y axis to use as calibration guages. You can import the resulting image into your cad program and then create the various lined. arcs and circles.
I've use this technique to create flat gasket patterns from castings and it has worked very well.

ok so if I use just two steel rules one in the x and one in the y I can use them to calibrate the image? I guess just trace the part with the drawing elements in Auto cad?

Yes that is exactly what I have done. What CAD software are you using?

Is this of any help?Good luck with Inkscape as I find it the least intuitive piece of software ever devised.
