    Question Journeyman 325 vs 425

    Hey everybody,

    I'm in the market for my first CNC mill and am looking for a J425. I guy on a different forum offered to sell me his J325 but I don't know much about those machines. Do any of you have opinions as to which is the better all around machine? Shop space isn't an issue and I'd just like to get the best bang-for-the-buck machine I can get my hands on. Also, I'd appreciate any leads on FS machinery you might know about.

    Thanks,

    Tim

    Tim, I responded on the other forum I had just got a 310. The 325 and 425 are the same basic setup but the 425 is bigger, bigger motor if running a rpc it might make a difference, spindle speed, table size, and quite a bit heavier. The 425 is pretty big, the 310/325 takes up about 2 times the floor space of a Bridgeport and weight 3400-3800 pounds, I think the 425 is close to 5000. In decent condition the 325 seems to be going @ 3500 the 425 around 6000, just my opinion on cost from me looking till I found mine.

    Sam, that’s incredibly helpful info. Thank you! How are you liking your 310?

    Is there a code to the Tree numbering system. For instance I have a 320, what makes it different from a 310 or 325. I've never found much background info on the net about the Tree model lineup, Any info you can share would be interesting and helpful to many.

    I'm not really an expert on these, just looked for s long time. Most of the machines with the numbers in the 200's are 2 axis machines based on their manual mills. The 310 and 315 are the exact same machine, except the purchaser paid for a high speed spindle upgrade to make it a 315. The 310 and 325 are the same except the 310 uses a 2hp variable speed motor, and the 325 uses a larger hp spindle drive. The 425 is a larger version of the 325, larger spindle drive, larger table, larger footprint, heavier. Under the 325 is usually 30 taper tooling, 325 and bigger is usually 40 taper tooling.

    Sam;
    Thanks for the details. I believe I see the progression of numbers. In my case, I have a 320 and its 3 Axis, has a 2 HP Spindle (3300 RPM max). Not sure what original electronics were on it, but it had a paper tape reader. It was ordered from tree with an optional 4th axis, which I still have and plan on rebuilding. It does not have a power knee, uses QC30 tool holders. It weighs about 3500 lbs.

    Thanks, Jim

    According to the factory brochure, the shipping weights are:
    210 - 3800 lbs.
    310 - 4200 lbs.
    325 - 4600 lbs.

    From another source,:

    425 - 6000 lbs
