1100 Series 3 - spindle speed increase keeping TTS (R8)
I'm frankly surprised my searches have not turned up more info on the subject of increasing the spindle speed of the Series 3 spindles in a cost effective way, outside of add on speeders or separate high speed spindles.
I have a 2nd hand 1100 Series 3 mill, with TTS and ATC, so I'm looking at keeping those features. I'm not changing to BT30 as that defeats the idea of a low cost performance boost.
The max spindle speed from the factory is 5140rpm which is a step up from my last machine but still not great for small tools that I want to use more.
I've noticed in searching the Tormach site that the motor is still the same PN for my mill as it is for the newer 1100M and MX mill that has a 7500rpm max speed (45% speed increase), or 10000rpm with the BT30 spindle.
Also the 1100M is still R8.
My questions are - anyone with a 1100M -
I'm really curious if the whole 1100M spindle is able to fit as a drop in replacement -
can you tell me the max frequency the motor is spun up to?
Or the pulley diameters (motor and spindle)?
I can find a drawing for the S1 (R8) spindle (guessing here as its ~2008 drawing) and am making an assumption it is the same for S3, but can't find the newer M / MX series spindle drawing (assuming to eb the same as the M is upgradable to the BT30 spindle). The 770 spindle (10000rpm) I can also find but its much too small to fit easily.
Seems like from Tormach its about 150Hz max for my 1100 S3 motor. (about 4375rpm) so I can figure out pulley ratios (i.e. for 10K rpm they need to be ~2.3:1, for 7500 they can be ~1.7:1) , just want some ballpark diameters that are used.
I'm sure the current S3 spindle is capable - the bearings are rated to much higher than 7500rpm so it would just be a case of watching the temperature of the spindle to ensure its not getting too hot.
I think the big difference between a M and S3 with the R8 spindle is the drive belt and pulley changed to Poly-V type from regular V belt.
Anyways, enough rambling, any info is appreciated, this is a slow update project...

You can buy the Tormach spindle cartridge for the 1100M, its balanced so it comes with the pulley, you only need the motor pulley and belt.
you will have to edit files in PathPilot to get the 7500 rpm, which becomes a pain if you keep pathpilot current.
With the M they also changed the VFD in order to increase motor hp.
Thanks for the reply David. It is interesting that its the same motor for the Series 3 (Tormach rates the spindle as 1.5HP) and the M (rated 2hp). I don't really have need for more power, just more RPM for the small endmills. That's why I'm also curious as to what frequency / RPM they drive the motor on a M series - what is the max rpm for that motor?
I'm mostly interested in doing my own pulleys and belt conversion, and running at 7500RPM with my current spindle. If I blow it up its nice to know that the M spindle fits. Any dimensions on pulleys? I didn't see an M series motor pulley on the Tormach site under spares.
As for PathPilot, yeah, making mods will be a pain if I keep it up to date, but I thought I read about a way to make a file that keeps your mods regardless of updates. That's a future me problem for now...
