Default New Device to control FEED/RPM/VELOCITY overrides in PathPilot

I'm in the process of developing a new hand held device that will allow you to adjust your overrides for FEED, Spindle RPM and Velocity without having to use a mouse on the main screen. The changes required to install are lightweight, and should be reasonably future proof when Tormach makes PathPilot updates. This is super handy when testing a new gcode program. Before you start the program, you set your Feed and Velocity to Zero, and slowly raise them until you are comfortable the program is not going to cause undesired cut results. Pressing the dials also activates Cycle Start and Feed Hold so you can completely control program execution from the pendant.

This device will be for sale at a future date.

I am looking for a few operators that are interested in helping Beta Test the device. I'm looking for people that are comfortable copying and editing files in Linux, and are using their machines at least 3 or 4 times a week. These testers will receive the product at a discount for helping test.

If you are interested, please PM me on this forum, or drop me an email to beta@rmgmillworks.com

    Thanks,
    Scott...

I'm curious why changes to PP are required. My functionally similar device works with any version of PP without changes. Just plug in the USB cable!

    Good Question.

Given the fact that Tormach chose to remove the HID software components from their distro of Linuxcnc a USB device is limited to emulating an existing Tormach Device. There are a variety of software options to do that, one being Franks Workshop - GenericHID. If you want to develop a device that expands capabilities beyond the ones exposed for Tormach PathPilot HID devices, you have to make changes to PathPilot. The trick is doing it in a way that doesnt require a ton of support work when PathPilot is upgraded.

Agreed. Tormach includes drivers for all devices required to control FEED/RPM/VELOCITY overrides as part of their standard distro. No additional code required.

I wouldn't call them Tormach Provided "drivers". One can create a usb device that emulates Tormach's operator console to extend these controls to another device. If all you want is to do is emulate that device, its not difficult.

I probably should have written "provides support" rather than "provides drivers".

    sagreen,

Not to rain on your parade, but this pendant has those functions as well as some nice additional features:

I have one on my 1100/S1->S3 and another on my early 15L lathe and quickly grew to prefer them over the Tormach pendant.

I've seen this device. I'm sure that the functionality it provides works as expected. Again, emulating existing functionality is not especially difficult. All of these features are exposed as a result of Tormach's operator console interface or hotkeys. The point is, if you want to use features that are not available via the operator console interface you must modify PathPilot to provide the desired functionality. Take the Ninjapendant for example. Many of the features on that pendant were far superior to any available using the provided Tormach software interface. To do that changes were made to the underlying code to support the device.

Of course additional functionality may require changes to PP. My point was that control of FEED/RPM/VELOCITY overrides does not require changes.

    Hi All,
Is there any documentation on how to interface DIY control devices to the Tormach pendant interface?

    Cheers,

    Peter

Apart from the spam answer above, I guess the answer is no.

    Cheers,
