Mint panel (taskbar) missing on fresh install PP2.5.1
I’ve been running PP1.9.13 for 5 years. Finally upgraded to PP2. Standard Tormach install went fine. As with PP1, I want to boot into desktop and configure PP to run in a window, not full screen.
So I did this:
- booted with shift+alt into desktop
- removed PP from startup
- stopped operator-login from shutting down
- moved Mate panel from bottom to top
- added some stuf to panel
- set display res to native (max)
- rebooted
Now the desk top has the gedit & PP2 start icons I added, but is blank otherwise. I can’t see any panels, can’t add a panel and have no useful left-click menu items no matter where the pointer is.
Rebooting has not helped. I have forgotten too much Unix/Linux so asking for quasi-noob help.

Ok I managed to get it working. I didn’t know how to start the MATE panels.
Just run mate-panel in terminal. Then I see that mate-panel is unchecked in startup.
Likely my error in first editing or was that way in original image.
Now working as I wanted.
Now what is the root password? Use to be tormach & pcnc1100
But that is not working.

You can just `sudo -i bash` as `operator`
Have an actual-login for the root account is generally not a best practice.

I found a similar problem when running a live install of Mint 19.3 from a usb stick. For the few things I needed to do I used the command line.Maybe i need to download a new .iso image in the hope that it won't have the bug.
