Depends on the type of motor, the older ones were simple Universal motors, now BLDC are usually used.

Do I need to insert the foot pedal wire to the control box in order to get it to work or will it be possible to just short-circuit some of the contact points with a jumper?

Have you replaced the foot-pedal with a potentiometer?
How is it wired?
The motor must have the pedal or pot in the off position to "ARM"...this is the safety interlock system....
Then you can adjust the pedal/pot to desired speed..

I think it depends on the type of motor the sewing machine has.
Are you still using a machine with pedals? If it is an old machine, you aren’t going to find easily the broken elements. In fact, it is another era already and we have to face the new products that appear on the market.
