    Default Taig Headstock ER32 conversion

Has anyone bought or converted a Taig headstock to ER32 Collet
I just sourced the parts and will post results below

Could have bought this but I think making one would be cheaper ,
I also want to integrate the factory 6 step pulley on to the conversion .

Factory bearings are 40mm in dia I will have to line bore the head to 42mm to accommodate
the 25mm x 42mm bearings to fit spindle , the sky is the limit when getting bearings - these can
be as cheep as $3.00 all the way up to $150.00 for full ceramics .

The finished ptoduct and here are the pictures on how I approached this , I had to use the Taig bearing spacer as a adapter to fasten the headstock to the 4 axis to mill the new 42mm bearing slots . Run out on the finished head is 1.5/1000 over the span of 3.0 inches which I can live with .

Total cost of me complete conversion was less than a $100.00 .

I have ordered another ER32 & ER25 collet chucks but with a shorter 100mm shaft and on a 20mm diameter shaft .The first crack at this I used a 150mm x 25mm chuck which I had to shorten by 50mm but you learn from your attemps . These new units will house a thicker bearing but with the same 42mm OD . Also two more bare headstocks from Nick Carter .

This is what the conversion will be used for - The ER16 takes a maximum of a 10mm shaft but the ER32 go all the way up to 22mm which gives me a little more elbow room on thicker shafted couplers .

    Peter,
    That looks really nice!
How are you retaining the ER adapter axially to the headstock? Are you using any preload on it?

    Hello Steve and thank you

No preload on this one as it has 4 bearings and they were a tight fit on the shaft , I cannot feel any lateral give so every thing is very tight but I have since
made another ER32 and ER25 headstock but with a smaller 20mm shaft and with a larger bearing in both. Fitment is not quite as tight so this allowed me
to place an rubber O-ring in between the rear pulley and bearing and preload set that way . Everything on these very tight with absolutely no measurable play .

Very cool! Good to know. Have you used any of your conversions on the Taig mill?

Not as of yet but I will be eventually fitting the ER25 headstock on the mill as to use a .500 inch high helix carbide - aluminum cutter bit .

Did you bore/drill out the C25-ER32-100L? Isn't the manufactured ID 14mm?
