the 540 driver is a bipolar driver,so the stepper motors need to be 4 or 8 wire,i would go to

I building a 4ft X 4ft CNC, I'm going to cut wood and aluminum, I was thinking about the HobbyCNC 305oz #23-305-DS8A http://www.hobbycnc.com/products/stepper-motors/
Does anybody know if steppers will work with Gecko G540 and if thy are good motors? if any one knows of a better stepper or a better place to get them I would appreciate it. also do you think 305oz-unipolar 4.2v 3A 8 wire will be enough power.

Choosing steppers is more complicated than "will these work"? Most 4 or 8 wire Nema23 motors will "work", but for optimum performance, you need to tell us how you are driving the machine, and how fast you want to rapid and cut at, and how much force do you need at those speeds. Different motors can give you very different speeds.

I'm new to CNC, this is my first build, my ballscrews are 5/8 -5 turns per inch, I think I'm going to use a Hitachi M12VC router or maybe a Spindle from Kelinginc.net or fleabay, I like the idea of the spindle but not sure what I would get into with the water cooling, Kelinginc.net has some package deals with the G540 and four steppers with power supply for $544.95 http://www.kelinginc.net/CNCNEMA23G540Package.html Thats with a 7.3 amp power supply for $80.00 more I can get a 12.5 amp not sure if I need it or not, and I'm in the dark on how much force I need, I know I won't to make some guitar body's and cut some aluminum parts out.

You won't need any db9 motor connectors with the G540, as they come WITH it. The G540 also has circuitry for simple spindle speed control and outputs for dc relays to turn coolant pump (Or router motor) on or off.

I am building a Router using the G540 Drive and see reference to a Set resistor installed on the G540 Drive but i also see here reference to a resistor installed for each drive?
Any help would be appreciated.

Each drive needs a resistor to set the current limit for the motor. This resistor is installed between pins 1 and 5 on the DB-9 connector that you will plug into the drive. There are no resistors installed on the drive itself.

I've been struggling with a similar issue re the G540.
Now that I got my resistors correct, I don't think it matters much. It's more about your jobs and what material you are working on.
And you PS
I'm just using some poor and medium quality 2.0A Nema 23 steppers right now, and a 24v 12A PS, and they will push through soft wood just fine, a bit slowly.
I plan on using a cutting laser, so they will be perfectly adequate for my application.
Oh. I wanted to add. The machine I bought had the wrong resisters on the original POOR quality 2.0A steppers. So they were running at 3.5 amps and one burned out, and caused the G540 to blow its fuse.
I had a pretty good quality Nema 23 sitting around, that I got for 17 bucks(You can get steppers for almost literally nothing on eBay). I fused it at 2.2A(and I'm a e-dummy) and it's like cold unsalted butter, and stronk as a dairy cow.
