    Default Are these stepper motors suitable for this cnc machine ?

    hello
    I am a beginner in the field of CNC
    I want to build a CNC machine with a length of 2000mm x 3000mm to cut cardboard paper

    For the X-axis : 1 Nema23 Stepper Motor 2 phase 4-Leads 270 Oz-in/180Ncm 76mm + Driver 4A TB6600
    For the y-axis : 2 Nema23 Stepper Motors 2 phase 4-Leads 270 Oz-in/180Ncm 76mm + Driver 4A TB6600
    For the z-axis : 1 Nema17 Stepper Motor + Driver 4A TB6600
    For the tangential drag knife : 1 Nema17 Stepper Motor + Driver 4A TB6600

    Are these motors suitable for this cnc machine ?
    What is a Best breakout board for this cnc machine ?

    If I'm wrong in something, please correct me

    Please help me with your advice

    Hi,
    without specifications of the motors its hard to guess.

    The size and torque of the motors sounds about right but you MUST buy low inductance (1mH-2mH, 1mH preferred and reject anything over 2mH) steppers
    otherwise while they may have enough torque at low speed they will be hopeless above a few hundred rpm.

    TB6600 drivers should be avoided, they blow up. You want drivers that are at least 60V capable and 80V capable is better, and then use a supply at or near
    the maximum the drive can handle.

    I guess you're on a budget?.
    As Craig said Don't go anywhere near those drivers. DM860 types are what you want.
    Now. Craig always says avoid any inductance over 2mh. While this is very true it is almost impossible to do on a budget.
    I accept around 3mh but no more than that.
    With the DM860 drivers ran off a 60V power supply this overcomes higher inductances thus giving more velocity.
    Higher voltage to the drivers doesn't damage the steppers at all but does create more heat.
    Higher voltage = higher rpm.
    Higher current = higher torque.
    You just need to monitor the motor heat during running and lower the current settings on driver as required to find optimal balance.

    In terms of breakout board it depends on what you are using for the pc operating system and control.
    You either go 32bit via parallel port (winxp or 7) those cheap 5 axis type boards with spindle relay have always worked well for me.
    Or you go 32/64bit (win7/10) using an ethernet board such as UC400eth, Smoothstepper, UC300eth etc.(doing it properly)
    (I've gone from 5 axis pport to 300eth now).

    Avoid USB like the plague!.

    Hi,

    Higher voltage to the drivers doesn't damage the steppers at all but does create more heat.
    This is incorrect, current is responsible for heating. The full voltage of the power supply is applied to the stepper only for a very brief period
    of time, typically a few usecs at the moment of switching.The high voltage 'forces' the current through the windings against the retarding effect of inductance.
    Thereafter the PWM current limiting effectively reduces the voltage applied to the stepper.

    You turn the current down to keep the motor cooler, but have to turn it up to maintain torque, a balance. Voltage is responsible for faster speeds,
    the higher the voltage the better from a speed perspective.

    Either way that we say it.... They bloody fly with a step up in voltage!!.
    I'll never go back to <60vdc on a 23/24 stepper.
    I've got 3mh 24's on the mill atm and love it.

    Hi UCH - What are you driving the system with? rack and pinion or belts. 3m is long for a screw. I highly recommend belts for this application. They will provide high speeds that you want for this sort of thing. Peter
