Default Help with Stepper, Driver, etc. for Proxxon MF70 Conversion

    Hi all,

I'm interested in CNC coming from a 3D printer tinkerer. I considered buying a cheap Chinese CNC to play around with, but I think I'd learn more by trying to convert my Proxxon MF70 micromill. I understand there are cheap kits out there, but I'd like to buy high quality parts for the conversion with the thought that I can learn on this and then when I have space for a shop next year I can use the knowledge, and potentially some of the parts, for a proper hobby level table CNC for woodworking.

I still don't quite understand all that's involved, but here's what I'm thinking:

    Bracket/coupler:
    Option 1: Aliexpress Nema23 adapter kit. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32796679293.html
    Option 2: 3D printed adapter

    Drivers:
    Option 1: Gecko G540.
    Option 2: Leadshine DM542T x3. https://www.omc-stepperonline.com/di...or-dm542t.html
    Option 3: Leadshine EM542 x3. https://www.automationdirect.com/adc..._drives/em542s
Option 4: James Newton driver kit (THB6064AH)

Steppers (will need to adjust depending on current rating of drivers)
    Option 1: 23HS45-3008D x3. https://www.omc-stepperonline.com/ne...m-8-wires.html
    Option 2: KL23H276-30-8B x 3. https://www.automationtechnologiesin...flat-382-oz-in

    Motion Controller:
Option 1: UC300eth-5LPT (I want to try UCCNC via ethernet; don't have a parallel enabled computer)

    BOB:
Option 1: G540 have BOB integrated I believe. Do I need or can I connect driver options 2-4 directly to the UC300?

PSU: (I'm more comfortable with a SMPS than a linear PSU, but I include an option below)
Meanwell HRPG-600-48. https://www.meanwell.com/webapp/prod...?prod=HRPG-600 (NOTE I already own this PSU)
    Linear PSU: Unregulated Linear 960W/ 48 VDC/20A Toroidal PSU (KL-4820) with 5VDC. https://www.automationtechnologiesin...4820-with-5vdc

Wiring, etc. depends on selections. Not sure if I need limit switches on such a small machine. UCCNC license.

    Thank you!

Morning. You have a lot inside your post that I will leave to others. My only writing will be about Stepperonline. I have been using them for a number of years now. Their products (the ones I am using being Nema 24/23 closed loop systems) are actually manufactured by Leadshine under license. I have had a couple of small problems, and these problems were immediately rectified very quickly. Infact one was outside the warranty period. I reckon that is stand-up good service.

Stepperonline have a series of motors, the "P" series is what they call their highest quality. I would suggest buying a kit then you won't have to choose between all the options.

The 8 wire motor is far superior to the other. inductance is what you have to look at, the lower the better because that determines the max RPM at a set voltage. so use it in parallel mode.
I would go for separate stepper drivers and a motion controller it's more flexible with the some motion controller you don't need a BOB
As far as I could find you can connect the drivers 2 and 3 directly to the UC300, but their UCBB dual port breakout board will make connections easy.
I would strong advice to install limit switches. also used for homing so you can repeat easy
I made my own system using a Planet USBCNC controller DM542 drivers ( cheap from Aliexpress ) and some 3Nm motors, yes the ones I bought have a to high inductance because I didn't know at that time 10 years ago. However the system is still working well ( not fast but for me fast enough )
