I am new here and to cnc machining. I just picked up a used machine and I am starting to have a problem with the stepper motor after 25-30 min of running a program. It will be moving as it should but when there is a command to rapid to the next position it will start to move then start humming and it stops moving but the read out on the controller shows that the table is moving even through it did not move.
I don’t want to start replacing parts it does not need but I’m guessing it’s either a stepper motor or stepper driver going bad when it gets warm.
Most probably you are on the limit of speed or ramp up.
The readout shows moving, because there is no feedback if the motor is missing steps ( stopped )
Try at a lower speed setting, and / or a lower ramp up setting..
The max speed is limited by the supply voltage on the drivers and induction of the coils. The higher the voltage and the lower the inductance gives the highest speed. Your stepper drivers are already a nice high voltage, and this is / was a working system
Stepper motors can be warm up to 80 degree or so, if they stay cold, check the current setting.
Check if there is any binding in your system with the power off
