    Default Stepper motor vibration problems

Hi all I’m trying to dampen the vibration from stepper motor on my x axis of my plasma cutting gantry, When the motor moves the steps causes vibration and it transfers to the entire floating head including the torch head .. I currently have vibration dampeners between the motor and the x axis which dampens the sound but still getting physical vibration, I’m using rack and pinion with bearings all around a square tube and nema 23 stepper motors.

Can anyone please give any ideas on how I can get it to run smooth as possible as this is effecting the cut quality of the parts.

    Thanx

Use a smaller pinion, and a gear reduction.

You mean basically scale down the rack and pinion?

Which stepper drive do you use?

    Please read this thread.

It will explain what is wrong as I made the same mistake as you have when I built my first rack and pinion drive.. You won't get good results with a direct drive pinion. Ideally you need around 25mm of travel per motor rev. You are probably up around 90mm. A 3:1 to 5:1 reduction drive will solve your problem. You can make one that bolts on where your motor does fairly easilly. About page 3 shows how I solved the problem you have.

Thanx for the feedback, my problem is mainly because of the stepper motor that is directly attached to the floating head and it’s vibrating the hole thing .... I was thinking of converting my gantry from rack and pinion to ballscrew , any suggestions?

    Thanx

You'll waste a lot of time and money converting to ball screws. The motor vibration is resonance from the stepper because of the poor design (moving too far per revolution). You are asking the stepper to operate outside of its optimum parameters. Using a ball screw will take you to the other extreme, not moving far enough per revolution (5mm or 10mm). Your top end speed will be slower than ideal for plasma. All commercial tables I've seen use a rack and pinion drive, you just need to add a reduction drive 3:1 or 5:1 using timing belts. It won't cost a lot nor will it take very long to make a reduction drive that has the same mounting pattern as a NEMA 23 motor and it will be sweet.
