Question Spindle and Stepper Driver issues

    Hello,

I have converted a manual mill into CNC. The manual mill I used is the 2-speed Benchtop Mill/Drill machine from Harbor Freight https://www.harborfreight.com/two-sp...ine-44991.html. I used stepper motors to drive the axis, with a 48V switch-mode power supply to power the stepper drivers. I also have a separate 12V power supply to power a DC Fan.

When I to connect the mains power from the spindle to the switch-mode power supply that runs the stepper drivers, my system encounters some issues. To explain, the first time I wired everything like this, the machine worked fine until I increased the speed of the spindle. When the speed was increased, the stepper motors stopped the machine and only the spindle was still running. The second time I wired the spindle and power supply together and increased the spindle, the motors stopped again and the drivers were completely destroyed. If I attach a separate power cord to the switch-mode power supply and plug it into the same outlet and the spindle's power cord, I NEVER encounter the above problems. However, I do not want to have two power plugs https://www.superbrightleds.com/more...-supplies/147/ to operate my CNC mill.

Can someone please help me understand the problem I am having? What is the best wire to wire the spindle controller and power supply to the same power cord? Should I use two separate AC/AC SSR? Why can't I wire from Ground of the spindle cord to earth Ground of the power supply, wire from Live of the spindle power cord to the Live terminal on the power supply, and wire from Neutral of the spindle power cord to the Neutral terminal on the power supply? If I have to have separate power cords to control the stepper drivers, and spindle, why?

The only thing I can think of is the electrical noise from the spindle controller is so bad that it is affecting the power supply. Using separate cords may offer enough attenuation that the system will work. Maybe use a power strip? Or add a choke and a filter to the spindle power wiring. Never heard of this before.

Ok, thank you! Do you think I use two AC/AC solid state relays to reduce the noise from the spindle affecting the power supply? I have attached two schematics, one using only two SSR, and another with two SSR and a choke and filter on the spindle power line as you suggested. If you can provide your input about both circuit designs, it will add more help and understanding for me.

    Thank you in advance!

I like the second drawing. I don't think the first drawing would offer any filtering.

I would install one of these https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail...zOVQB61AVxQ%3d
