    Default VFD troubleshooting

    Hello there,

    Like many it seems, I am new to the world of VFD's and finding little support.

    I got a 2.2kw 220v spindle from Amazon. I wired it as directed and programmed it according to what the dealer sent me. This was before I found posts here. In their settings it was set for 4 pins. I got it all set and hit run. The spindle stared to spin up but as it approached the upper speeds it would almost disengage the spindle part but the motor would still run, then I would get an EOCA error. I changed several settings and tried again but nothing helped.

    THEN, I found more posts and reset everything to how they suggested... The spindle would spin at low speeds but as soon as I increased it, the error occurred again.

    In checking my wiring, I found a pretty significant issue. Although I assigned the correct wires from the VFD to the pins on the motor connector... I erroneously though that the connector would only fit in one position... such was not the case. So all that time, I had rotated the connector 1 pin clockwise. So the hot leads were actually on pins 1,3. and 4 (4 being the ground).

    When I plugged it in correctly, now the second I hit the Run button, it shuts off and I get the EOCA error.

    So, my question is... is it likely that I damaged the spindle with my first setup and that is why it won't work? Also, does that fit for what would have happened with a hot lead connected to a ground?

    Thanks so much for any insight!

    Oh... one more question... if these are 3 phase motors, why is it set for only 2 pins?

    Thanks again,

    Chris

    Here are my current settings.

    Again, it is a 2.2kw, 400Hz, 220v 24,000 rpm spindle.

    PD001=0
    PD002=0
    PD003=400
    PD004=400
    PD005=400
    PD007=20
    PD008=220
    PD009=15
    PD010=8
    PD011=150 (per VFD documentation)
    PD014=12
    PD015 =15

    PD70=1
    PD72=400
    PD73=120

    PD141=220
    PD142= 8.5
    PD143=2
    PD144=3000

    So your Parameters are Ok, are you using a Air cooled spindle or a water cooled

    It is ok to say PD011=150 if it is Air cooled PD73=150 as well both should be the same, 100 to 120 for water cooled spindle

    It you put power on the 4th Pin you would of had a dead short and most likely damaged the VFD Drive, if the 4th pin was connected to any thing

    The correct wiring is and should only be wired this way

    Pin 1= U
    '
    Pin 2=V

    Pin 3=W

    Pin 4= Ground

    all pins must be connected, the Ground in the spindle must be checked also that Pin 4 in the spindle plug has continuity to the spindle body if it does not this has to be fixed, if you have air cooled this is a little more complicated than the water cooled spindles

    Should of asked in the first post does your spindle have a 3 Pin Plug or a 4 Pin Plug if only a 3 Pin then it will have to be changed for a 4 Pin and correctly wired to the motor

    Mactec54 thanks for the input.

    My motor is water cooled, with 4 pins.

    I have another motor on order, the one I have clearly is damaged. I'll adjust the PD73 and PD11 to 120.

    I appreciate all the insight.

    Have you checked the Pins with a multimeter to see this will show you if the spindle is damaged Just measure the resistance ( ohms ) from Phase to Phase and to the spindle body

    Pin 1 to Pin 2=

    Pin 2 to Pin 3=

    Pin 3 to Pin 1=

    Pin 4 to Spindle Body and all 3 other Pins

    When you got the EOCA fault did you check to see the wiring in the plug has not got a short, this is where this happens mostly, so check the plug where you have connected the wires there may be something touching you need to insulate each pin there is not much room in these terrible plugs

    Ok... so it looks like a winding is bad.

    P1 - P2 = 1.2 ohm
    P2 - P3 = .5 om
    P1 - P3 = 1.1 ohm
    No continuity with P4

    I did check the wiring in the plug and there didn't seem to be an issue, although when I rewire it, I will add some insulation just in case.

    I was also wondering about the jumper on the VFD.... VI and VR ... it came with the jumper on the right side (being VR) but the few references I have found on it say it should be VI... I can't seem to find out what this actually does.

    Yes they should be all the same or very close to it, that is normal for P4 to have no Continuity, that is why for years I have posted, that this is the first thing you have to check with these spindles

    What you have to do is take the top off and connect the P4 to one of the screws like this photo

    Don't worry about the VR or VI that is for remote control or sometimes you have to change it for the Pot on the front of the drive to work

    So with the spindle disconnected does the VFD Drive turn on ok

    Well my replacement motor came today, and after seeing how this one was packed, I am thinking that the kit I got before had been opened and damaged.

    So, I tested the new motor and all the ohm reading were great. Hooked it up and it fired up perfectly!

    Now I'm on to the next challenge which is trying to figure out how to get my X-Controller to control it via Easel.
