    Default Looking for guidance on new 1.5kW Water cooled spindle

    I just got a 220v 1.5kW Water cooled spindle & Huanyang VFD model HY01D523B. This is going on my X3 mill as a second spindle. I'm running LinuxCNC with Mesa 6i25+7i76+7i83 so I plan on controlling it with 0-10v unless there is a better way with the equipment I have.

    I am planning on using CF6-15-04 16AWG igus continuous flexing cable from VFD to motor.

    I am looking for recommendations on:

    Breaker size. Motor is 5A. Inverter says 7A output.

    Parameters (mactec54 if you would so kind sir)

    I have a line reactor on the input side of my DYN4 1.8kW AC servo spindle motor. I was thinking about connecting to the line reactor to feed the VFD as I will never be running both spindles at the same time. Is there anything wrong with doing that?

    I have looked yet but I will be looking for the appropriate size line filter. I used Schaffner Noise filters on my DYN4.

    I'm am now boning up on my Chinglish reading through the manual.

    Thanks in advance
    John

    You Breaker would be for a 20A Circuit 7A output means the input would be around 14A so your closest would be 20A for 240v single phase

    You could use the reactor but a Line Filter would do all you need for the VFD Drive Input Power and then it would not compromise the DMM Circuit which should be separate

    Yes will post you the Parameters for your Spindle

    Mactec54. I have everything wired up and I am ready to turn on the power.
    Below are the parameters that I came up with by starting with some you gave in other posts for a 2.2K spindle Please let me know if these look OK. Items in blue are questions or settings that I have a lot of doubt about.

    Huanyang HY01D523B, 1.5kw water cooled 220v 5A spindle. Used in USA 60hz 240 volt

    PD001=1 (1 For Remote Control)
    PD002=1 (Source of operating frequency 1 for remote terminal)
    PD003=400 (Main Frequency)
    PD004=400 (Base Frequency)
    PD005=400 (Max Operating Frequency)
    PD006=400 ??? (Intermediate Frequency)
    PD007=20 (Min. Frequency)
    PD008=220 (Max Voltage)
    PD0011=120 (Minimum Setting 120)
    PD009=14 (Intermediate voltage)
    PD0010=8 (Minimum voltage)
    PD13= 1 is for Factory reset, Only use this to set VFD to Factory Default Settings
    PD014 Accel=12 ( Adjust to suit)
    PD015 Deccl=12 (Adjust to suit) ( IF PD26=1 Is Used Then the Spindle will Coast to a Stop)
    PD023=0 (Reverse run forbidden)PD044=1 for RUN function
    PD050=03 Fault indication (Y1 Output Function) on terminal DRV
    PD051=05 Set Frequency Reached (Y2 Output Function) on terminal UPF
    PD070=0 (0~10)
    PD071= 20 (Analog Freq Constant 0~50, 20 default)
    PD072= 120 (Lower analog frequency 0~400)
    PD141=220 (Motor Rated Voltage )
    PD142=5 (Motor Max Amps) (Set for your motor Amp Rating 1.5Kw Spindle 6 Max)
    PD143=2 ( Motor Number of Poles)
    PD144=3000 (Max Motor RPM) =3,000= (24,000) Don’t understand this one.
    PD160=1 (the target value of PID is the value of the external analog 0-10V)

    Which settings are the "smoke" settings (the ones I should never change)?

    Are the KA & FB terminals shown in the manual just a dry set of contacts?
    Do they close when the spindle is running?
    I don’t have a terminal labeled KA on my VFD. Is it labeled something else?

    Thank You
    John

    Can you post a photo of the Terminals

    These are what you need to set, you have added others in your list that have nothing to do with your spindle setup, and if you have changed them return them to the default setting

    The Relays yes ( 1 ) can turn on you choose which parameter and Relay you want turn on, when the VFD turns the spindle ON ( if the Parameters are set ) you can measure the Relay to see if it is turning ON /OFF
    ONLY turn the VFD ON / OFF from the KeyPad or with remote Control through the FOR /DCM Terminal

    PD144=3000 this is the magic number that allows you to reach the max RPM of your Spindle

    Relays to check
    PD052=01 FA / FB / FC

    PD053=01 KA / KB

    Huanyang Mactec54
    1.5Kw 400Hz 220v Water Cooled
    PD000=0 for Parameter unlock ( 1 ) for Parameter Lock

    PD001=0 (1 For Remote Control) ( 1 For 0-10v Terminal Control or Remote Trim Pot Control ) ( J1 Also Needs to be set for Terminal Control )

    PD002=0

    PD003=400

    PD004=400

    PD005=400

    PD006=200

    PD007=20

    PD008=220 (Motor Rated Voltage)

    PD009=110

    PD010=11

    PD011=120 ( 100 Minimum Setting with Quality VFD, 120 is Safe)

    PD13= 08 ( Is for Factory reset, Only use this to set VFD to Factory Default Settings )

    PD014=8 ( Acceleration Adjust to suit)

    PD015=8 ( Deceleration Adjust to suit) ( PD15 is ignored IF PD26=1 Then the Spindle will Coast to a Stop)

    PD120=120 ( Stall Prevention )

    PD141=220 ( Motor Rated Voltage )

    PD041=8 ( Carrier Frequency max up to 10 )

    PD142=6 ( Motor Max Amps for 1.5Kw Spindle)

    PD143=2 ( Motor Number of Poles)

    PD144=3000 (Max Motor RPM) =3,000= (24,000)

    PD70=0 ( This may need to be set to 1 if Control Voltage is 0-5v )

    PD72=400

    PD73=120 ( 100 Minimum Setting )

    PD120=120

    PD174= (Set to Max VFD Drives Output Amp Rating )

    No changes made. I have not even applied power to the VFD yet. Here is a picture of the terminals. It did not with any manual. I have just be using a manual I found on-line.

    After first power-up I will set the parameters and test using the panel on the VFD.
    Then I will switch to remote control 0~10 volt from the 0~10 volt output from the Mesa 7i83. This is the same way I control my DYN4 spindle motor.
    If I set PD001 to 1 do I also have to set PD002 to 1?
    I will also move the jumper J1 to the 1-2 position.

    I think you have don't it but just checking input power is connected to R and T and Ground to the Ground Terminal

    When You say you have a DYN4 spindle , Do you have 2 spindles

    You will have to try that PD002= if it needs to be ( 1 ) or not some do some don't ( 1 ) is for External Terminal use

    J1 always needs to be moved for external Terminal use

    Yes, 240 single phase connected to R & T. Ground connected to ground terminal on far right.

    4 to ground

    Yes, I also have a 1.8kw DYN4 servo powering the mill spindle. I have two separate LinuxCNC configs that each use one of the spindles. The two are never powered up at the same time.

    I got the VFD programmed and ran it for just a few seconds because I have finished the water cooling yet but and all seems well so far. The frequency settings were already at 400 but I accidentally reset it to factory settings and had to do them over again.

    Thank you for your help mactec54.

    There where some others Parameters in there to set that you did not have and some that where different that needed for you to change

    Lock the Parameters once you have them set PD000=1

    I went through and set all of the ones that were on your list. Tonight I am going to finish the water cooling and then set the parameters to get it under the control of LinuxCNC. Then lock the parameters.

    Thanks

    I've got the water connected and running. Ran the spindle at 8400 for a couple hours just to let the bearings break in and see how hot things get. Well, so far they don't. Neither the motor or radiator got over 78F. The fan that came with the radiator is pretty weak as I can't feel the breeze with my hand so if it starts to get hot when running full speed I'll change that out first. Now its on to connect this to the CNC control. I wanted to use the relay contact shown in the manual labeled KA & FB to turn on the 12V power to the water pump and fans. I don't see a KA terminal anywhere on the VFD and the manual diagram shows two FBs but there is only one on the VFD. I have another way to do this but this way would be cleaner. Does anyone know where the KA terminal is? Or what it is actually labeled?

    Not all the VFD Models have all the Relay outputs, here is a snip of the relays on a different model, so what you see in the manual does not always relate to the model you have

    Your FA and FB will work the same for what you want to do

    Your cooling fan may be thermal and only blow more air if the temperature gets higher

    Thanks Mactec54.

    The more I think about this and how quiet the pump is I think I'm just going let the pump run anytime there is power going to the VFD. That way it will continue to cool even after the spindle is stopped.
