    Default spindle vs vfd

    Hi Everyone,
I'm new here, an hobbyist with a chinese cnc 6040 with prt 1500w vfd. I've been making windsurfing fins from g11 and have run into a spot of strife. I recently ran into the holding mounts, not once but twice and noticed that now the spindle now has an unusual noise at a certain rev. I'm going to say that I've done a bearing or something similar. So, I thought it's time to replace the spindle with a slightly more powerful spindle (2.2kw) with an er20 chuck. My Question, which may appear obvious to most is, do I need to change the vfd (1.5kw) as well, or will the prt do the job?

Yes, you do. You'll need a VFD rates for 2.2Kw or larger.

Ok, thanks for that ger21. I think I'll look for the same model as mine, or thereabouts.

what is your max supply amps you have for the 240v single phase supply, this will determine what size spindle you can run

Just had a look at the meter box and it's 63 amps on the main switch. The new spindle is 8A.

I'm in W.A, south of Perth. I've just decided that it's going to be cheaper to replace the spindle with a 1.5kw and flog the new 2.2kw. And I'll call it lesson learnt. should have done more homework.

63A is your mains supply not what your wiring is for your power outlet

You need to know what the outlet amperage you are connected to, the wiring of the outlet will have an amp rating this would need to be a minimum of 25Amps to run the 2.2Kw on your 240V single Phase supply Spindle they are 8/ 9amps 3 Ph

A 2.2Kw VFD Drive needs to have a minimum supply of 25Amps to work correctly

Thanks mactec54, I've got 40 amps in the shed. But, I think at this stage I'll sell the 2.2kw spindle and work with the 1.5 just purchased.
New bearings should make a difference. Cheers

Well, that was good news, as the seller hadn't sent the 2.2kw spindle, they did a refund. Very happy with thier business acumen.
