Yes, just set the current rating to match the spindle.
Hi all,
I have a Chinese 6040 with a Nowforever 1.5KW VFD (model D100S1R5B) that let go of its magic smoke, with a 1.5KW spindle. I ordered an exact replacement, but have been delivered the 2.2KW VFD (model D100S2R2B). Is it possible through the programming of the VFD to derate it so that it can safely run a 1.5KW spindle? I would prefer not to have to go through the pain of returning it and getting the right one if at all possible (China post already lost the first one).
Cheers
Simon

(Note: The opinions expressed in this post are my own and are not necessarily those of CNCzone and its management)
They sent you a VFD with more capacity, which is better, you smoked the first one because either Parameters where not set correct or the wiring was not correct, these machines have a problem with there wiring which in your case needs to be corrected before you turn it on
Check that your Hot wire is connected to ( R ) Terminal and ( S ) to Neutral, Ground / Earth must also be connected, if you can't find a Ground / Earth Screw, then connect to the Heatsink of the VFD which if it has aluminum mounting feet, that would be the place to connect the Ground / Earth wire
Parameters post what you have set, I have a Parameter list for these VFD Drives

How long did the first VFD last?
Hi,
Thanks for the replies.
@ger21, I don't know how to do that. That is what I was asking.
@mactec54, I am pretty sure everything was setup ok before. I suspect it may have ingested something (was machining aluminium at the time) that caused a short circuit. I don't have the settings from the original VFD, but they where left as the set from the CNC machine supplier, except for changing it to use AIN1 to control the speed. I think these are the ones I changed.

I don't know what any of the other values where set to. The spindle is a watercooled 1.5KW 24000rpm 400Hz model if that helps with getting the correct settings.

There are not many to set in this VFD Drive, you have some of them in your list, some need changing as well, see if there are d1 parameters for your VFD also, as some of these may need setting to protect the smaller currant Spindle
