    Default What router to buy?

Hi, I’m a NZ hobbyist who’s currently building a CNC router.
The time has come to choose a router/spindle...

I’m looking to cut wood, and maybe some aluminium. The biggest problem I’ve come across is the voltage that most routers on the market take. It would’ve been an easy choice, simply buying a porter cable 890 or one of those DeWalts that everyone suggests, but since we run 240v over here in NZ, the 240v dewalts can cost upwards of $400 for just the fixed base router.

One good option I’ve come across is buying a new $150 1600W plunge router, and try to figure out a mounting solution for it.

    Any suggestions welcome

That would total for around $400 NZD, and my entire machine has cost me under $1000 so far. Any other options with an off the shelf router?

Sounds like your plunge router option is going to be the most affordable. I've seen it done before. Sorry, but I don't know what you have available down there.

Thanks for the confirmation. Do you know by any chance how those routers were mounted? I can’t find any info on using a plunge router as a CNC spindle.

I've seen some that leave the plunge base on, and mount that to a plate.
