I'm considering a modern pc retrofit for the dead 1983 Amada SS104 two axis stepper motor control on an Amada SP30 single station sheet metal punching machine. Basically, it is a X-Y positioning stage where operator holds material against "stops" and a footswitch controlled hydraulic ram punches the hole. Amada estimates $2000. for field service plus 6 weeks to send "boards" to Japan for bench repairs and then offers a 6 month warranty. I think the size 34 steppers and drives are ok; just need a new reliable controller. However, I don't know how to do this task. Any suggestions for project management, material sources, and cautions would be appreciated!
