Extended tailstock upgrade for 1720xmtc

Hey all, longshot here but thought I'd ask. My machine is a 1995 1720xmtc. I have the original tailstock but I think the travel is only a couple inches. It looks like on next-gen machines the tailstock travel is around 4"? Not sure. Anyway, when turning with a center I have to use a 4" extender to reach over the saddle - not the best for rigidity.

That's an issue with all the 3 in 1 machines because of the width of the milling table. I think the next generation Eldorado after yours had the longer tailstock travel. I have a vague memory of someone who made an extension to the rear of his tailstock and then fabricated a new barrel and screw, but not sure if it was on this forum, You tube or somewhere else. Maybe do some searching around.

That is exactly what I've been mulling over. I started to design an extension but thought to try this forum before I get started fabbing.

The short travel is a pain for drilling. However my 1720 XMTC is now full cnc with a multifix tool post so I will be able to do this when I get the right tool holder.
