Default Basic differences between two types of Hybrid Stepper setups?

I'm dipping my toes into hybrid steppers, for a Sieg X2 mill ( small Chinese import)

I see two different types, one type has the controller attached to the motor. The other type has the controller remote, connected with wires.

So I was wondering aside from the wiring, is there a functional difference between the two. I've looked at the specs and from the perspective of a newbie I don't see a difference.

Can anyone provide some tips or seeds for learning about them?

A controller in a separate box is more protected from heat, dust/chips/coolant, vibration and mechanical damage. That's my two cents.
