Question how to find the right driver for servo motor?

Hey Guys I have a AC servo motor (got it for free but it should work)

    - it's a MITSUBISHI HC-MF73-S15
I was wondering, how do i find the right servo driver? (one that works with the motor)

I've done CNC builds before with regular stepper motors, Is servos much different/ harder to work with?
Can I do the wiring with only basic electronic knowledge? (I know a lot about mechanics and metal working... not alot about motors and wiring)

the goal is to get the motor to run as commanded through Mach3.

    hope you can help me

To make it easy on your self you should get the Mitsubishi Drive that suits that motor, I'm sure they will have the needed spec's on there web site, try to find the cables as well, this will make it, almost plug and play

One thing to look for with the Servo Drive is that it will take Step / Dir signal's, if you want to run it from Mach3, you may want a Smooth Stepper Board as well, it would run direct with the Mach3 control, for max performance, from your motor you would need something like the Smooth Stepper, I have one to sell if you need it

I'm guessing Mitubishi doesn't have the cheapest drivers, I hoped I could get a cheaper alternative (I haven't looked though)
for my other cnc projects I've used a Leadshine MX3660 controller, How is a smoothstepper different?
(I might be interesting i buying yours, what's the price for one of those)

I have the same problem--I got 3 very nice servos off an old industrial robot but have not figured out how to drive them, besides buying an old controller for them which even used is several hundred $ on ebay. I don't know a lot about servos but do know they are more picky about how they're driven since apparently they mostly have different electronics on the encoder part, the part that tells you where the drive is, one of it's big selling points over open loop stepper systems. I was told by Rutex.com three years ago they were developing a new driver board that would work with my old servo but three years on and no sign of it. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but there are essentially no generic control systems for servo motors and they all require very specific control circuitry? (vs. steppers which by comparison are plug and play, if you feed them the right current and give them a step & direction pulse)

oh, very interesting products, thanks for the link. I should have been more specific in my question adding, "no generic control systems for servo motors... that would cost less than a used driver from the servo brand I have (Kollmorgen)." Those granite boards are nice but the cheapest variation I see there is the motherboard + single motor board for about $365. I just find now a used Servostar (the 'proper' one for the Kollmorgen servos I have) on ebay for about $170 per drive. I was hoping for something less than that but I guess that might be a pipe dream.

The Granite drives are the only "universal" servo drives I know of, but they are not cheap.
