Lightbulb Staying Safe While Using Industrial Cutting Blades

    Blade Safety is a Priority

While powerful industrial blades are incredibly useful in manufacturing processes, they are also non discriminatory in regards to what they cut. Because of the nature of these blades, it is important that safety measures are put in place, and all protocols followed, to ensure that all of your workers reach the end their shifts with all of their digits and limbs intact.

Carolina Knife & Manufacturing, Inc., has compiled this list of safety tips that should help you and your employees be aware of the inherent dangers that come along with working with industrial blades. Proper awareness and training will go a long way towards keeping individuals free from injury, or in some cases, even death. Make safety a priority with these helpful tips!

    Preventing Cuts, Lacerations & Punctures
You should only ever use the correct tool for the job at hand. Never use an industrial blade for a purpose or function that it was not designed for. When you use any equipment for a reason it was never intended to be used, you risk the tool reacting in an unexpected way, potentially causing injury.
Make sure that all employees that will be using your industrial cutting blade are fully trained in its use. Many needless injuries occur simply because someone was not properly trained in its use.
Regularly inspect your industrial blades. Blades that become dull or damaged require much more mechanical force to be effective. A blade failure could cause damage to a piece of equipment, or worse, the operator of that equipment.
When it is possible, make sure that you’re working in an environment with proper visibility. Some work environments prevent this, but every measure should be taken to have as much visibility as possible.
If you have any possibility of accidentally coming into contact with an industrial cutting blade, you should always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE), such as cut resistant gloves, as well as safety glasses to protect your eyes in case of blade failure.
When the blade you are using is hand-operated, you should always cut away from yourself, and make sure that no part of your body is in the cutting path. Also be aware of the potential path a blade may take if it slips, and try to stay out of its path.
Blades should always be stored properly when not in use. You should have a storage system in place to accommodate all of the blades that are ever removed. Unorganized clutter is a quick road to disaster and accidental injury.
Although many blades are very strong, you should never need to use excessive force when using an industrial cutting blade by hand. Blades are strong, but they’re not indestructible. Excessive force could cause a break, or cause you to drop the blade. If you ever drop an industrial blade, never try to catch it. It may be instinct to try to do so, but do your best to avoid this almost sure-fire way to injure yourself.
It should go without saying, but never engage in any unprofessional horseplay around industrial cutting blades. One slip is all it takes to go from having a fun time to trying to navigate a serious situation.
If a blade is ever removed from the mechanism it belongs to, you should never leave it in a place where it is not visible. For example, never place objects on top of a blade where someone may accidentally pick it up, not knowing it was there. Blades should always be in the location where they are being used, or safely stored.
Unless you are a circus performer, you should never, ever throw blades. If another worker needs the blade you are using, set the blade down, and let them pick it up.

Additional Tips for Cutting Blades in Powered Machines
There are some additional safety measures that you and your employees should take when an industrial cutting blade is being used in a powered piece of machinery. These include:

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when operating or cleaning machines that use sharp blades.
If a piece of equipment is broken or malfunctioning, you should have proper lock out/tag out procedures in place. Stop all power to the machine, tag it, prevent it from being used, and make sure the proper supervisors are notified of the malfunction.
Make sure that you always know where your hands are in relation to the cutting blade. Keep your hands away from all moving parts of mechanical equipment, regardless of the presence of a blade.
If a blade ever seems to be jammed, you should never try to dislodge items with power still going to the machine. Even with the power off, built up kinetic energy can be released when the obstruction is removed, so use extreme caution when clearing jams.
Ensure that the work area around industrial cutting machines is clean and clear from objects you may stumble or trip over. Use best practices and common sense for workplace cleanliness.
If your mental capacities are ever impaired by illness or medications, you should never attempt to operate machinery with sharp cutting blades. Slow reaction times and a lack of attention to the task at hand is a dangerous combination.
