    Default Optimill MH25V CNC conversion

    Hello everyone.

    I just started my first CNC conversion project on a Optimill MH25V.

    Straight out of the box and directly to disassembly.
    I will try to upload images as the project progresses. Please comment, as I am very receptive for suggestions and constructive criticism.
    A little about the machine:
    BT30 spindle, 0-4000 rev/min belt drive and inverter.
    Quick tool shift (manual) with allen key,
    Spindle head has a massive counterweight.
    The rest can be seen on one of the pictures
    I have so far decided to use the following components:
    Nema 34 8Nm closed loop with associated drivers
    2005 ballscrew on all axes with direct drive 1:1.
    Still need to figure out the following:
    Should I supply the drivers with AC24~70V or DC30~100V
    Which controller (breakoutboard) should I use? Must be calculated for 5 axis and for Mach 4.

    The counterweight is an 18 kg heavy bastard . and the milling head itself weighs 40 kg.
    The new 20 mm ball spindle, will now be placed inside the column, where the counterweight before lived. This counterweight must now be moved outside on the back of the column, where it will be led in a sort of guide. Perhaps I need to add some more weight to compensate even more!

    Nice machine man!

    I would think that sticking with AC would be cheaper for your power system. Just grab a transformer that has suitable power and voltage ratings. I don't think that such transformer would come close to the price of the DC power supply.

    Hello, How are you getting on with the conversion? I am just looking at the same project with the same machine. The BT30 spindle with the quick tool change system looks very good.

    Hello
    I've got a MH25-SV equipped from the start with stepper motors on all 3 axes. You'll see that these motors are rather small and should be NEMA 23 (If you need it I can seek in the mnual). . I'm rather disappointed because though the column is closed, the deflexion when pushing on the Y axe is 0.06 mm not better than a smaller SIG X2. One issue is that since the counterpoise runs in the column, there is no way to put cement époxy in it. Another issue is that the back of the column is encumbered by the electrical box, unabling any easy accesse to the column . I'm thinking of replacing the original stand dedicated to this model by a stronger base made up of heavy steel tub, which would help to customize an ad hoc bracing to reduce or suppress the column flexion. By the way what about your project?

    Your project is very interesting ! Did you progress in your CNC conversion ? Are you still happy by choosing this MH25 Optimum ? Or now you think that this MH25 was not the best choice for a CNC conversion ? Thank you for your reply.
