Working on assembling a Predator from George.
A 2.7 hp teknomotor is on its way and I am building the controller box using some Chinese drivers and 420 oz steppers. More to come.

Those are 425oz motors at 3amp

Need the 1200oz steppers on there

Did you do the top yet

Table top is now done after many holes. The cutting surface now looks much bigger with the top on.
That is a viper sitting on top which I am getting ready as a turn-key machine.
Spindle will be here hopefully this week. Anyone have any suggestions for where I can buy some VFD cabling? I found this one source below but some other options would be good also.

Thx.

Why is the Z-axis set up so low on your machines?

more rigidity on the round rail machine, if its only cutting sheet. on the predator, not necessary, raise it up for clearance i say.
i did a test recently on my new raptor, pulling with a good 50-60lbs of force on the top of the z. i was getting barely more than 5 thou movement at the table. to put that in context, i get only little less on my novakon cast iron mill!
predator should be at least as stiff as the raptor i think.
I don't think it would make a round rail machine more rigid. In fact, it would probably have the opposite effect depending on the size (length) of the spindle.
Round rail machines are most rigid at the ends of travel. If having the Z so low moves the Z axis carriage to the middle of travel during use, it will make it less rigid.
I have my raptor set up so that the bottom of the Z-axis is flush with the bottom of the gantry. I still don't understand why George doesn't pattern the holes to allow this (I had to drill my own). Dropping the Z-axis a couple inches will have zero to slightly more than zero effect on rigidity but it affects your clearance plenty. If you want to make the machine more rigid, make the uprights shorter and use a shorter stroke Z.

Predator has little over 3 inches higher uprights than the Raptor has.
Z axis holes have been moved

Also i dont think that is the final set up spot for the Z axis, he has the double bearing 2.7hp spindle

More progress to share with pictures and my first video. The only thing left is to wire up the VFD and spindle and I should be making chips. I will be doing some testing with aluminum and making use of my milling machine vise. The machine is silky smooth and fast, I almost hate to make it dirty.
Machine is running at 6000 mm, not an actual cutting speed but neat to watch.
