Looking of Alternative to Laptop to run Planet CNC Software
I am adding controls to a three axis machine with one of the axes being a rotary axis. For development purposes I am using a laptop to run the Planet cnc software. I am getting ready to design the panel for the production machine and am looking for a small and inexpensive pc to mount in the panel that could run the software. A monitor and keyboard that would withstand an industrial environment would be helpful as well. Can someone recommend a solution? Thanks,

thin clients are mini desktop business computers that are usually connected to a network https://www.cdw.ca/search/Computers/...180629232219:s
they can be found second hand for a dime a dozen

Re: Looking of Alternative to Laptop to run Planet CNC Software
Ok. I found them thanks.
Next question, I would like the HMI to be able to be located on a moveable carriage that travels on a 65 foot x axis. I assume that this cannot be done by a USB cable. Any suggestions?
Also, the HMI would need to be compact and able to withstand a weld shop environment with lots of metal dust.
Is there a way to get the controller to communicate over an Ethernet? We have network cables all over the shop.

Re: Looking of Alternative to Laptop to run Planet CNC Software
I read that these boards can run from SD card without a computer, is that correct? If so, where can I find out more information about how this works?

Re: Looking of Alternative to Laptop to run Planet CNC Software
SD card adapter can be used for normal CNC operations to some extent. Note that without computer will not be able to set any working offsets, speeds or other machining parameters.
SD card is only supported with CNC USB controller sw, with TNG this item is currently not supported.
There is a possibility that in the future TNG will support SD card adapter with more usable features and flexibility. But there are no guarantees.

Could you explain what "sw" is? I am not familiar with the term.

Re: Looking of Alternative to Laptop to run Planet CNC Software
I would like to understand how the machine would work without the computer. I assume the code would be saved on the SD card and inserted into the card adapter. Assuming there is more than one program on the SD card, how does the operator choose and load the program? How does the operator zero the axes? I assume start stop and pause are done with external switches on the panel somewhere. Please explain as I may consider this as an option. Thanks,

Can the unit operate from a jump drive as well?

My last question was the wrong question to ask. What I meant to ask was, can the machine run from a network drive without the software running?

Is anyone out there using an SD card to run PlanetCNC hardware?Or is anyone using a remote computer via the Ethernet port to run PlanetCNC hardware? If so, please share your experiences. Thanks,
