Your body acts a a receiver for any stray AF (50 or 60 Hz power line frequency) and/or RF in the vicinity. Your finger conducts that hodge-podge of frequencies into the CLOCK input of your L297. Whenenver the chip detects a rising edge, it will take that as a clock signal. Not very reliable and potentially dangerous...

    All the best,

Is there a reason why you want to use the L297? It's a very old design. Better chips are available. The tb6560 requires no microcontroller. But you will need to make sure to follow the proper power sequencing.
