    Default Tool Life Improvement

    Dear Experts
    Did not find any other forum hence posting in this group
    Kindly let us know on how to improve tool life
    We are trying to ensure adequate coolant flow, cleanliness of tool pots during periodic cleaning, cleaning of tools during toold change via flush coolant from top and air blow from spindle face, revisiting tool life, still tool life not upto the mark
    Any of you have experience of using G wizard software, please share your experience

    hello again

    adequate coolant flow
    yup, depeding on tool, coolant should be powerfull, or like a shower arround it; there are a few specifics, related to turning or milling tools :
    ... use 2 nozzles for turning tools, one from above, another from below
    ... edm some collets, so to make them deliver peripheral coolant
    ... be sure that nozzles diameter is big enough, otherwise you may loose presure

    cleanliness of tool pots during periodic cleaning
    clean the toolholders when you remove them from the machine, then again when you put them back ... if one tool is not used for a long time, consevate it : oil + wrap it in plastic ( for example mill tollholders, or something expensive )

    each time a tool is added in the machine, clean the atc pot, or the turret face

    cleaning of tools during toold change via flush coolant from top and air blow from spindle face
    i suppose this is about the atc sequence on mills : in most cases, is important to protect the toolholder taper ( thus keep the atc pots in good condition ), and the spindle face from being chips-free ( add some coolant / air near the tool change position, and write a macro )

    revisiting tool life
    there are methods for long term setup ( based on coolant nozzles, vibrations during machiniing, keeping a record of tool life mrr, or parts / edge, etc ) ... for short jobs, is a bit harder, because it depends on the programmer & operator skill

    still tool life not upto the mark
    defining a realistic mark requires trials, since materials quality may change from one delivery to another, and also inserts quality may vary ( for the same product / insert type )

    thus there are variations caused by materials and inserts quality

    if you wish to achieve stabiltity, you have to stabilize your cutting process, so not to be affected by a lower quality material and/or insert

    however, in practice, this may mean to go harder when all is ok, and slower if something is not ok, thus this requires a dynamic approach

    for such stuff, i use load monitor history ... but in general, this has to be handled by the programmer & operator combo

    for long term setups, is good to record all trials spec, effects, and other infos, because, in most cases, going faster is a mirrage, because it has a big chance to lead to more machine stops ... it requires on the shoop floor observation, acroos a looong time, thus an experimented operator .... you can't go fast with less experimented operators, because going fast may lead to a suuden failure, and an less experimented operator may not notice it / kindly
