One of the main reason I like discrete designs is that the cost is quite low when things go wrong. I've been doing my initial circuit using IRL/IRF530's since they are only about $.50 each. They can only handle 100v, but it should be quite easy to switch to HV parts after the circuit has been debugged.

I find it very useful to heatsink the FETS, even when they don't need it. Putting a zener in the gate will also prevent a lot of dv/dt problems. Most of my FET bone pile were due to software problems causing an overload. Fuses would have helped, but they cost as much as the fets. What I really need to build next is a current limited high voltage power supply.

    Default HappyServo still happy?

    Hi Derek!

I read through your thread and noticed it suddenly stopped in December. Has there been any progress on your brushless servo controller design?

    Thanks!

    Syp

I know this is an old thread, but did this project ever move forward or is it dead?

    Thx.

    Chris.

Also in newer commercial application (european design)
All in one power. Rectifier, brake choper and output side IGBT.
Drawback: External IGBT driver needed which makes HillBilly's choice much better for
    simpler driving design.
