Hello all, it's been several years since I've been active on here. My last project was a 7 x 10 lathe
I'm back again, this time with a custom X-carve. I started with a 1000 x 1000 machine, and shortened the Y-axis to 635mm. Due to lack of space, I wanted it to fit on a nice worktable I already had. Once I had the basic machine built, I started wondering about controls, and mounting all the various components I needed. Then I looked on the other side of my garage at a tool cart that had (operative word here) a nice 4-drawer module that was relatively easy to remove from the cart, just drilling out a few rivets.
I basically turned the bottom drawer into my electrical cabinet. I'm using a DDCSV1.1 CNC controller mounted in one of the top drawers. The way it's mounted, it just clears to close, then hinges up to latch into place at a nice viewing angle, into the aluminum extrusion. It feeds the signals to the G540. I also added LED light strips under the X carriage. The base work surface is a piece of 7 ga. (.179) mild steel with 1/4-20 tapped holes in a 3" grid. The top board is just a piece of particle board with clearance holes drilled thru to match the tapped hole pattern.

Actually liking the controller quite well. Of course I've not done anything too serious with it yet, but from all indications it looks like it should be great.
The DDCSV1.1 is understood to be a "mm only" controller. All the parameters & feed rates are labeled as such in the configuration pages. Ignoring that, I simply configured the motors as "steps per inch" rather than "steps per mm", and it works fine that way. The 3 decimal place display is perfect for a router.

Good to hear you are finding your way with the controller.
I considered the "steps per inch" route as well, but had not thought thru all of the ramifications, so elected to stick with mm for the time being. I will make changes for mine and start proofing that as well. I program in inches, but have reconfigured my CATIA and Mastercam post to make the conversion after the CAM system, but I would rather have native inches.
Have you performed any 3D type of programs through the controller yet? I ran one yesterday, but reach more than 200 mm/min (7.87 in/min feedrate). I am working on changing the parameters in my leadshine drives/motors to help that in hopes that it is not the controller. I have successfully reached feed rates of 16000 mm/min(629 in/min) in 2d moves greater than a few inches.
I was also pleased to find that the controller supports M01...which is not printed in the manual that I can see.

Excellent! I've not done anything 3D yet, mostly 2.5D. I've had my machine up & running for only about a week now, and still need to get my table clamps made (which I will do next week).
Catia & Mastercam? High-end stuff!! I'm running SolidWorks with HSM (Autodesk "free" add-on product). I'm also quite new at HSM. Having been away from CNC for awhile, it will be somewhat of a learning curve.

It sounds like you and I are pretty much at the same place with our builds.
I'm a Senior NC Programmer in the Aerospace industry so I'm involved with a lot of software packages. I've been contract programming for most of my 30yr career and purchased the two packages my customer base uses.

Rob, you've got some mad skills there ! That's very impressive, wish I had your talent.
I don't actually know anything about CNC router tables , but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night
+1 on that! Those skills would come in extremely handy in this hobby. I have bounced between automotive and aerospace design work. You must have a pretty strong business to have purchase both of those programs. I know they don't come cheap! Congrats on a strong business & career.

How is your machine running with the "inch" conversion you are doing with the pulses-per-mm?

Very clean build! I had the predecessor to the XCarve...the Shapeoko2. Mine was 1000mmX1000mm and there was way too much flex. I donated the SO2 to my local Makerspace and built my own machine which is infinitely stiffer.
