I did check square yesterday again. I used my tooling plate, which I know has a square pattern of holes. I zeroed on a bored dowel hole and chucked up a slightly undersized dowel. I lowered the Z and made sure it slipped into the hole. Then, i raised the Z and took it out 20" on the X and 12.5 inches on the y. I dropped the Z again and made sure the dowel slipped into the hole.

Well, Ray thinks the servos need to be tuned. I am waiting on John for parameters. That's the next step I think.

Did you ever try swapping the X and Y drivers?

Regarding servo parameters, if your machine is anything like mine was, virtually all the servo parameters will be set to their default values... AKA not tuned at all. I seem to recall that there was a single value that was set to something other than default.

If you think there might be an errant setting somewhere in the servo drivers I'd recommend simply getting into the configuration menus of both the X and Y and comparing them. I think you'll find that they'll match 100%. The reason I mention this is because, if the two drives match, there's no point in waiting for settings from a 3rd party.

I have the settings now. Gonna check things in a little bit. I never did flip the x and y servo drive. I was going to until I measured the 90 degree squares and found out they were parallelograms. If I don't find anything in the drive settings flipping the drives is the next thing on the list.

Just inputting some parameters is NOT going to tune the servos to the machine (:-) . Like Hood mentioned see if the Manf has software to help tune the servos ON THE MACHINE under a load applied to the bed.

Also SEE if the Manf has a proceedure to adjust the gibs. It is NOT just about getting them snug. You can easily get the table out of square playing with the gibs.

    Terry,

The tuning as provided by Novakon works fine. It is not fine-tuned for each individual machine (I don't know anyone who does that for machines in this price range), but performance is still excellent. What Nate is seeing may be a result of some parameter being improperly set (which he is now checking), but when set to the Novakon defaults performance should be perfectly good. I have two machines using the exact same drives and motors as Nates, one of them is an identical machine to Nates, and both work extremely well - 500 IPM rapids, with consistent part accuracy of better than +/-0.001".

    Regards,
    Ray L.

Found the problem. A setting on the Y servo drive was not set properly.

The results are beautiful, my bearings now fit perfectly and the finish is much better. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions provided!

That's great that you fixed it!

What setting was incorrect? What was it set to? I wonder how it got that way.

It was setting P040. It was set to 50 when it should have been set to 0. According to Ray, "it basically makes the servo response sluggish, and it will take MUCH longer to reach target position, as it will approach it exponentially."

It was definitely set at the factory that way. It just so happened I have been running parts for the past year that never required the type of pocketing operations that showcased the error. The machine was fine for the drilling, facing, and end cleanup operations I was doing.

On another note, yesterday I learned the value of full retracts. I broke a drill bit and threw a part from the fixture because the bit got clogged with chips. I was doing just a chip breaking partial retract. Made it through 4 holes before taking a dump. Will be trying it again with a full retract this afternoon.

Fixed the deep drill issue on the bearing blocks. Here is the first batch out and the fixture plate for them:
