Default Garbled screen on Mori SL-1A from the 80s

I've got an older Mori-Seiki SL-1A from the 80s we're trying to squeeze just a bit more life out of. Mechanically this machine is fine. It still makes parts if you load everything by memory (not fun doing that with no screen). The thing is, a couple months ago it was running along just fine and the screen suddenly garbled. There are some letters and numbers on there but nothing you can actually use to set the machine up. We've already tried replacing the monitor and the video card ( I assume it's the video card as it was the one the monitor plugs into) and the screen doesn't look any different. Does anyone have an idea what we could do to get the screen working on this old tank?
