    Default Carriage lock

I have a harbor freight 7x10 lathe that does not have a carriage lock. I looked at a kit to install on my lathe but with shipping costs it would cost me about $50. This is too much! I read that the carriage feed could be used as a carriage lock. By putting the feed screw in neutral and then engaging the half nut that this would act as a carriage lock. Does anyone have any experience with this?
