Default Cheap and easy upgrade: Brass Gibs

After a little whine with my cheese: http://www.cnczone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=109176 I got a nice brass gib out of a scrap piece of round stock.

The pic on the left shows the oilway, this is the side against the stationary dovetail.

On the right, shows the pockets for the dogs on the end of the stock setscrews with clearance added for the threads. Also, marked by the white arrow, is a hole I drilled through to the outside world. I added an LMS oiler, but it sucks. I'll either just tap it or get a better oiler. The hole lines up with the small vertical channel shown on the first pic.

I was going to make thumbscrews for it, but it adjusts so easy now, with the brass, I may not.

Thanks, Mr. Blades. I decided I should replace the LMS oiler. I was going to make one, then decided I should just make a plate to cover the whole top of the crossfeed to maaybe add rigidity. Then I decided to grenade a gear in the mill while fly cutting. No biggie, got it running again in 5 minutes. Grenaded the new gear on the first pass. Ordering parts for the $20 belt conversion

$20 belt conversion? Is that for a mini-mill?

Actually.... thinking it through, LOL... I spent about $20 for stock and a belt to make my own... I'm guessing that's what you mean?

Q: How many tools does it take before a simple task becomes a project?
A: Just one. I'm the Tool that turns a simple task in to a project.

Here's my ghetto-cheap belt conversion. Funny, ghetto-cheap seems to be a common denominator in ALL my machine mod projects.

Blades, I found your conversion early on. I went with hte $20 belt drive, b/c I need the lower gears intact. If I grenade those, I'll probably order the metal gears or a new mill

Troy, yes for an x2. There's a thread on it, I'll post it tonight. It's hard to search for They used SDP toothed pulleys and a belt to eliminate upper gears, retaining the lower gears for gear reduction. I ordered mine from MSC with a free ship code, because they arrive next day via ground. A little more expensive, but cheaper with the shipping code. Note the MSC belt is 0.2" shorter, so I may need to modify or get the SDP belt. The latter would suck, because I would have to pay shipping and wait.

Yeah, with my conversion, you definitely lose low-end torque. Works great for faster spindle speeds, but not worth a damn for slow speeds.

Doh! One of the pulleys is coming from Nevada instead of IN. First time that happened with msc. That will take a week. I guess "in stock" means it's somewhere on the planet. The rest will be in tomorrow. I didn't order until after lunch today. Looks like I'll be lathing around for a while...

    Nice sig blades! :rainfro:

Lol! You'd pretty much have to be drinking and/or smoking to come up something that profound! :rainfro:
