    Rick,

It is at a standstill since we have not been able to get our $hit together.

    What are you building?

    Thumbs up

    Rick,

A fixed gantry is a very good idea, they are super solid.

I prefer a moving table machine over a moving gantry 10 to 1 even though it takes move real estate.

Do you have any pictures of your build?

How long have you been on the South Side?

    Rick,

What kind of parts or you going to make on your CNC?

Once upon a time I lived on the South Side however have not crossed the Mason Dixon line "Madison Ave" for over 20 years.

A shameless, last-ditch effort to find someone local for this job:

    Exclamation

I had posted this in another thread... But I'd like to resurrect this idea.

    http://www.cnczone.com/forums/cnczon...shop_club.html

    Hey All,

I know its been brought up before, but I'd like to take on the task of organizing a Machine Shop / DIY Metalworking Club based in the Chicago Land region.

    My goals for this club:
    1. Form a club that revolves around metalworking in general and possibly other things...
    2. Plan meetings once every 2 months or at least once a quarter (depends on "membership")
    3. Nurture the DIY spirit and get people with a common interest together
    4. Exchange information relating to metalworking
    5. Educate and help each other out

    Bright Future Plans:
    1. Fully incorporate club to "make it official"
    2. Eventually purchase / rent a "club shop" space for meetings and member projects.
    3. Grow membership and club.

If you are interested please send your contact information to MachineShopChicago@GMail.com

This idea is in its infancy, so initially no face to face meeting will be called only email exchanges. I'd like to judge membership before I put in the effort required to get this off the ground. I'm located in the St. Charles area about 35 miles West of Chicago. I do not have a web site for this yet, but that may change depending on interest. I will keep an eye on this thread over the next couple weeks and answer questions.

    My background:
    Engineer by degree
Own my own "home shop" w/ Bridgeport milling machine, South Bend Lathe, and other metalworking equipment/welders.

Doesn't seem like anyone is interested at all. There is a hackerspace in Chicago called pumping station one. Check out some videos on YouTube. There is a walk through of the place. Other than that everyone is antisocial it seems.

Make it 4. I'm still interested. Just didn't post for a while due to apparent lack of interest. Pumping Station One is a general hackerspace, as I understand it, and work on everything. To us metalheads, it would be little better than a simple hangout. Anyone who is still listening have any concrete ideas on how to proceed (if at all?)

We should decide on a central meeting spot and a day like: "meeting the third Saturday each month".

We can conference call with Teamviewer to plan logistics of the meetings etc.
