Default problems loading old autocad files

    hi all,

bit of a strange story here. someone I know on a car forum I'm a member of designed and was producing some shock brackets that were specific for the type of car I have. well, after some time, life got in the way, so he got too busy to bother with the shock brackets anymore. Rather than just letting his design die off, he released all of the cad files for anyone to use to make the brackets on their own. a very nice thing to do!

fast forward to recently. I actually need these brackets so I can replace the shocks on my car. the problem is, my friend who is a machinist and is willing to make some of these brackets for me, is not able to open the files in mastercam (or solidworks) that the original designer provided for us to use, and he's not a computer guy at all.

I spoke to the original designer a few hours ago and he mentioned that they were created using autocad 2000 or 2004 - he can't remember as they were made way back in 2007. he also included a .pdf of the brackets in case the autocad files didn't open correctly...though I've read mixed things about using a .pdf file to create cad files.

I'm an IT guy myself but know basically 0 about cad software and from what I've seen, almost all of them cost money to use.

can someone please convert/update the .dwg & .dwf files (I assume both are needed?) so that they'll load into a version of mastercam that's about 2 years old? it'd be greatly appreciated!

here's a link to where all of the files can be found: Index of /webimages/motor Mounts/Shock Brackets

    thanks!

The DWG/DXF load OK if you still need them I can convert them, not to Mastercam however.
    PDF, JPG etc.

    you could also try this
    https://viewer.autodesk.com/

The files in link you provided that I opened (20000A_base.dxf) was just a 2d print. complete with border. Nothing exotic, except metric dimensions.Yuck!
If you have fully dimensioned PDFs, that you can Print. The only thing the dxf or dwg will save you is redrawing the geometry.

    Cambam beta. The free version.

Use it to open your dxf then save it as a dxf. It will put an extra dxf extension on your original file by default. That's all there is to it. Open and save, and Viola! Then you can import it into Mastercam. I use it all the time for getting dxf files into Mastercam when Mastercam can't read them.

Hope that helps. As far as the dwg files are concerned, try Double Cad. It's free too and it will even tell you what vintage dxf/dwg files you have there.

I've done this many times and I know it works on this vintage software. It's really, really easy.

    Good luck,
    Alex
