Default How to reduce birds nesting on taps?

    Hello,

I'm a new user of a VMC, trying to do some tapping in 6082T6 Aluminium.

I've been using a M6 tap with no problem, but I have an M5 tap which today I tried to tap 20 holes in succession and experienced quite a lot of birds nesting.

I'm wondering if someone could help pin down why this happened, coolant etc is the same.

The difference is of course size (6mm vs 5mm), pitch (1MM vs 0.8MM), RPM (600 vs 500).

The M6 holes were drilled with 5mm, the M5 with 4.2mm - these I believe are correct?

The only variable I can control is the RPM, all others are fixed for tapping.

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks,
    James

Use roll form taps. They work great and no chips. That's all we use on the Haas, in all materials. It's possible that aiming a lot of coolant at an angle to the tap might knock the chips loose between holes. Sounds like you are getting a bit of chip welding at the tap tip.

I would try to tap faster 1000-1200 rpm. I have better luck with them getting thrown off if I tap faster.

Thanks for the ideas guys, I've been taking most of my feeds and speeds from the data sheet and GWizard but was lost on tapping speed. I'll try and tap faster and see if this helps.

1st choice roll taps are great as no chips are created
2nd choice thru hole spiral point tap
3rd choice blind holes high spiral flute tap

what you don't say is the machine make and model, the control
    tension/compression tool or rigid tapping
whether these are thru holes or blind hole and the depth
all these things makes a difference to anyone trying to give advise

    examples are
    haas vf2 1998 i would tap about 500 rpm
    haas vf2ss 2011/ okuma mc v4020 2009 i would tap at about 2500
fanuc robo drill 2017 i would tap at 5000 rpm
