I'm fairly sure you can run Linux in a virtual machine.Rather than doing so I would partition the hard drive and set up the system for dual booting to ease the load on resources. You don't need a huge amount of HD space and after a while you might be tempted to do more and more with the Linux installation.Gparted, which is easily found for most versions of Linux makes this easy and it can be done while running from a live Linux session. Its the way my homebrew machine runs and since I use LinuxCNC,the Windows partition doesn't see much action. One anomaly is that I use Freecad to create toolpaths and rather than return to the house for this I run the Windows version of Freecad under Wine. Not perhaps relevant to this section of the forum, but it might be of interest to some of you.

Have you tried running AutoSketch v10 under WINE? That would be nice.

Mind you, W7 & Mach3 with NO internet connection works fine on a production basis. Zero virus risk. File transfer by sneakernet.

    Cheers

I don't have AutoSketch and consequently wouldn't know the answer. If you have it and could download an iso image of a Linux distro that will run live, you may be in a position to tell us if it does work.

I agree with the comment about older versions of Windows running perfectly well.Among my acquaintances, there is one who runs a router using XP with no internet connection and another runs a mill that is programmed in DOS.They both produce useful parts.

One of these days I will try that with Knoppix. I have the distro.

I was running my machine in production mode until it died - using WXP. I had to 'upgrade' to W7. The vendor was sstill not keen to supply that.

    Cheers

It is better to reinstall a latest version of Windows 10,by the way, making a Widnows 10 installation disk for installing it.

The Windows 10 has Virus Protection, Internet Access, and is regularly updated.
The Virtual session of Windows 7 is locked down and runs perfectly and is unaffected by anything happening on the Windows 10 host as shown in this video
In the video I am running Mach3 and simultaneously running a BobCad Simulation for a 750,000+ lines of GCode
