    Default Computer to run Linux CNC

    Hello,

    Can the following spec. SBC (computer) run Linux CNC with Mesa card connected (likes 7i76ED)?

    Khadas VIM Basic:
    >Amlogic A311D-x4 2,2Ghz
    CortexA73, x2 1.8Ghz Cortex A53
    >Gigabit Ehternet with WOL support
    >LPFFR4/X
    >programmable MCU
    >NVME SSD: M.2 connector
    >2GB RAM
    >16GB eMMC
    >...etc

    I use a slightly faster computer with 4Gb RAM to run LinuxCNC via a parallel port with no trouble.I would think you will be fine but suggest you don't run other applications while the computer is controlling the machine.It may be worth taking a look at some of the machines on youtube that are operating LinuxCNC with quite minimal computing power.A long time ago I ran a 5 axis router from a 450MHz Pentium 2 with 64Mb RAM (on OS2/Warp) so I don't think you will be making huge demands on the computing power as long as you generate the program before using the computer to take care of producing the parts.

    Thanks for the information, I am on the final step to settle the use of Linux CNC in my new built milling machine. And soon to purchase a MESA card as well. I hope I can handle all the stuffs as what I had done on my previous Mach3 machine. There is 6 axis screen available for download. In Mach3, screen can be easily be modified by adding DROs, buttons, LEDs etc.., writing Marco programs to run the probing and toolchangier cycles with V,B language. Implementation the use of pendant is not difficult. Yet there is the use of touch screen operation but I haven't implemented it. Knowing there are deficiencies in Mach3, I now switch to Linux one...Before using Mach3 12 years ago, I started CNC with Linux, but all my memories already gone now, I am almost fresh in it and start the learning curve again.

    YEs, I found adding a touch screen in Linux was plug and play and the Gmocappy GUI supports it nicely.

    If you have more questions ask on the linuxcnc forum mentioned earlier.

    I was under the impression that Linuxcnc was x86. There are variations such as MachineKit but I believe they are taking a slightly different approach. I could be wrong about this as I haven't looked into MachineKit lately.

    Does the board even have suitable ports for the Mesa card?

    It certainly would be nice to have Linuxcnc running on these ARM based cards as the low cost and the multiple cores make for a compelling platform. This thread had me looking at Linuxcnc.org and they have a new release for the beginning of the year, yippee.
