Default Information about Your Experience with cheap Linear Rails

    Hello to Everybody,

pardon in advance for my English, I am from Italy.

I have had a little mill (Sieg X2) some little lathes Sieg and a chinese 6040 cnc router , I have done some little works on soft materials for understand something of the milling and turning.

Recently I bought a 6040 chinese cnc router, a bargain for the price, not without defect.
In particular by pressing with the hand on the spindle I see that the XZ group flexes by about 0.5 mm but I could not understand if the cause is due to the round bars of the X axis or to the frailty of the Z axis bars or to the thinness of the Z axis structure. It could be a combination of causes so before making modifies and spending money I prefer to reason about the various kind of linear rails before making a new machine.

I am now thinking about a little machine similar to 6040 cheap but reasonable precise, an hobby machine but rigid as much as possible to use on aluminium with light passes but in stability. The original 6040 is not so bad but need very and very light final passes not to leave marks in the workmanship.

In my hobby experience I have used:

-Hiwin linear rails: a very good product for money but not so cheap for 3 or 4 axis
-Sbr linear guides.some works well, other not so well, I don't know the brand and I never used for cnc router but for little wood support
-Round shaft with round linear bushing, I don't know the brand; also these ones used for not precise jobs.

Now, I would like to ask if, in Your experience, are there

    -some SBR-TBR
-some chinese linear profiled linear rails similar to Hiwin

that can be interesting in term of cost/performance to build a cnc hobby router or if , in order to have a decent cnc router , the minimum to buy are profiled linear rails from Hiwin or better brands such as Thk, Bosch or others?
Are there chinese brands that can be an alternative.

Also I would like to ask, from Your experience, if SBR style are really rigid in any position (XYZ, both orizontal or perpendicular es. Z) or, as for round bearings, there is some flexion.

If you have cheap brands for ball scrrew, linear rails and mechanical parts to build a cnc router I am grateful.

    Thank You for reading

    Kind Regards,

    Graziano

    Hi,
in order to get the rigidity you want, you need square rails and bearing loaded cars. Hiwin do a nice range, you need the heavy duty design but 15mm rails will be fine.
There are plenty of Chinese made copies, often a lot cheaper, but of lesser quality. They would still be a big improvement on your 'spaghetti' round rails.

If you want quality without the cost maybe you could try second hand. I made my mini-mill from second hand Bosch-Rexroth rails and was very happy. My new mill
is much bigger and I used new-old stock heavy duty 20mm THK rails and cars for a fraction of new price. I also used second hand, near new ground C5 32mm double
nut BNFN THK ballscrews, they were a steal at $1000 for all three including shipping. Had I bought new they would have cost $3000 each plus shipping!

    Hello Craig joeavaerage,

    thank you for your information.
About used rails , yes it is an option but I prefer to use new products, here in Italy is not so easy to find used parts and I don't want to have problems to Anyone.

Moreover , in some configuration, SBR and TBR style has the advantage to give to the structure more rigidity from the moment have a high profile because there the sum of aluminium that keep the round steel bar and
at the opposite sides you can ore the round bar and bolt to the main structure.

The question is if these kind of skates (the open ones) are enough rigid (they have a lateral screw to make them stiffer) or if they are not rigid due to their own conception.

Anyway if you know some brands of Chinese alternatives both for supported shafts and for square rails I can try to see if they are a possible alternative to important brands.

    Thank You

    Graziano

    Hi,

here in Italy is not so easy to find used parts and I don't want to have problems to Anyone.
Most unlikely to find used parts in Italy, at least not cheaply. There are a number of companies that specialise in second hand motion parts, some truly second hand and other new old stock.
You can get quality parts at a fraction of new cost and the company I linked to is one of them. I have made eight purchases over eight years and I prefer this Korean company to any European/US/Japanese
company, you get exactly what you pay for.

The Bosch Rexroth linear rails I bought eight years ago I have just (six months ago) taken out of service as I retired my mini-mill....they have been perfect despite being second hand when
    I got them.

Moreover , in some configuration, SBR and TBR style has the advantage to give to the structure more rigidity from the moment have a high profile because there the sum of aluminium that keep the round steel bar and
at the opposite sides you can ore the round bar and bolt to the main structure.
Rubbish....round rails , supported or otherwise, cannot compare to the stiffness of square rails.

Anyway if you know some brands of Chinese alternatives both for supported shafts and for square rails I can try to see if they are a possible alternative to important brands.
Most, if not all, Chinese made look-alike brands do not publish their names or supply details about their companies. If you dip down into that part of the market, good luck to you.
I personally would rather have quality brands second hand or new old stock than junk new parts.

    Hello Craig,

sorry for the delay, I don't receive the notice of a new message by email, I don't know why.

    Thank you for your information.
So, according to your experience, square rails are the best choice.

Very interesting also the last part of your observation, it is difficoult to understand brands and details of some Chinese products.
I appreciate your council, to dip down that market is too much confusing.

If I understand the brand I can make some attempts just to understand when and how to use them viceversa, when I need the best rigidity I have to stay on square rails.

    Thank You

    Graziano
