Pull out the original, and check Ebay for a match.
Hello,
The HiT-18s i have been operating has recently become inoperative due to a failed hard drive. I have done some searching and can't determined which hard disk drive will work, or where to find them. I am under the impression there is a limit on the space of the IDE hard drive required due to motherboard limitations. Is this true? Also are there other limitations on replacement drives needing to have identical firmware same model number and such? Thanks for reading.

I ordered 1 from eBay used. But what arrived was only a pcb possibly the internals to a hdd. It needs to be an exact match on the drive?
What interface are these hard drives? I am unable to connect them to a pc for formatting. Also I've had the drives tested prior to trying them and I'm being told they are bad as well. Is there a different distributor that might have new or otherwise working drives? Possibly a cnc salvage company?
An exact match is most likely to work. Most CNC salvage shops are on Ebay. Worst case call Siemens.
Thanks for the reply. We've ordered a few hard drives, all in used condition. The tech has tried them all and determined they are bad as well. I was wondering how to connect them to a PC to give it a try at formatting myself. Siemens quoted something like $2500.
I have not worked on Siemens controls much, but on Hard drives on other CNCs I have had luck with the LOGICUBE products for making back up Hard drives.
I bought 20 drives on ebay and cloned them from the drive that came with my machine. It isn't difficult, but you need the right cables and software.
Here is a link to the cables I bought
USB 2 0 to IDE SATA 5 25 s ATA 2 5 3 5 Adapter Cable | eBay
I don't recall the cloning package I used, but I can check at work tomorrow.
I cloned all the drives and that may be the nut for you to crack. If you can't clone your existing drive, I can help you out.

The drive you need is a 2.5" IDE drive.
Either physical or solid state.
I am still trying to get the name of that cloning software that worked great.

Turns out i was working off the wrong information the hard drive was not the issue. It was the keyboard interface.
