hypertherm powermax 45xp Ohmic sensor question
Hi all,
Planning to use XP45 with FineCut ohmic kit and somebody told that tip is isolated from electrode and sensing can be used also when arc is On. Is that true?
My cirtcuit has relay which could disconnect ohmic input but if I could keep it on and monitor if torch tip touches materrial during cut - that would be great.
Or may be disconnect it only during firing and then connect back On again when ARCOK signal received?

First, their is no part called a tip in a Hypertherm torch. The electrode is negative output from the power supply, the nozzle is positive during pilot arc (arc start/transfer to material) and the shield is 100% isolated from both. The shield is often used to locate the surface of the material (ohmic sensing) and can also be used during real time cutting as a collision sensor with the material. There are a number of commercially available machines that use the shield connection for finding the surface, then after the cut starts for collision sensing, as well as for collision sensing during traversing to the next cut cycle.
